Chris Barnes announces transfer portal entry
Chris Barnes announced Sunday afternoon that he’s leaving Wake Forest and entering the transfer portal.
Barnes was a redshirt freshman this past season and had a breakout year. The diminutive receiver had 690 yards of total offense (547 receiving, 143 rushing) and another 263 yards on seven kickoff returns.
He was Wake’s leading receiver this season, with 39 catches. Barnes’ three receiving scores tied for the team lead — all of them came against Oregon State on Oct. 11. He had two 100-yard games — three catches for 102 yards against the Beavers, and six catches for 149 yards against FCS-level Western Carolina in Wake’s second game.
The Houston native had a 98-yard kick return touchdown against N.C. State in Wake’s ACC opener, along with a 70-yard catch and run early in that Sept. 11 loss.
The 5-7, 168-pounder transferred to Wake Forest from Washington State. He redshirted in his lone season in Pullman, Wash., so he has three seasons of eligibility remaining. Barnes cannot officially enter the transfer portal until Jan. 2.
Barnes is the sixth wide receiver to announce plans to enter the transfer portal in the last couple of weeks. But he’s the first one who caught at least one pass this season — he just caught more than any other players on the team.
