Freshman quarterback Elijiah Oehlke will transfer out of Wake Forest according to a report from Max Olson of ESPN.

Oehlke did not play for the Deacons this past season and will have four years of eligibility remaining. He cannot officially enter the portal until it opens on Jan. 2.

Oehlke was the only quarterback signed a year ago by Dave Clawson. Two weeks after that signing, Clawson resigned. Shortly after, Jake Dickert was named Wake Forest’s coach.

Dickert brought with him Steele Pizzella, who had signed with Washington State before Dickert’s departure. Early in fall camp, Pizzella received some first-team reps — though after a week he was back to working predominantly with the third-team offense.

Per Rivals Industry rank, Oehlke was the highest-rated recruit who remained in Clawson’s final signing class. The 6-2, 223-pounder had recorded offers from Liberty and James Madison.

The current returning quarterbacks for next season’s roster are Deshawn Purdie, who started two games this season, Pizzella and Billy Johnson, a scout-team player. They’ll be joined by incoming freshmen Grant Lawless and Gannon Jones, a couple of in-state players.

Robby Ashford, Wake’s starter for most of the season, is in his final season of eligibility.
