Wake Forest announced Tuesday evening that Jake Dickert has signed “a long-term contract to continue” as coach of the Deacons’ football program.

A mere 349 days after Dickert was hired at Wake Forest, he’s gotten an extension on his deal.

“Our family could not be more grateful to call Wake Forest and Winston-Salem home,” Dickert said through a news release. “Serving as the head coach of this program is a privilege, and I want to thank President Susan R. Wente, (athletics director) John Currie, our board of trustees and University leadership for their belief in what we are building.

Over the last 11-plus months, our staff and student-athletes have embraced a new process of being ‘Built in the Dark.’ When John approached me a few weeks ago about the University’s desire to further invest in our program, I was both humbled and energized.

In his first season after replacing Dave Clawson, the Deacons went 8-4 this season. They are the only team to hand Virginia an ACC loss this season, and in late October dealt SMU its first ACC regular-season loss.

Dickert took over a program that went 4-8 in back-to-back seasons. That came on the heels of a seven-year streak of bowl berths (2016-22), and Wake Forest was ranked in the College Football Playoff during the 2022 season.

“Jake Dickert has proven himself to be one of college football’s rising head coaches and one of the truly special leaders in the ACC,” Currie said through the news release. “To earn eight wins in his first season — the most by any first-year coach in Wake Forest history — while defeating two CFP Top-25 opponents and establishing one of the top defenses in the nation is extraordinary.

“He has galvanized our locker room, our campus, and our community. Coach Dickert is exactly the type of leader who inspires players, and he and his family fit seamlessly into the Wake Forest and Winston-Salem community.”
