Tate Carney announces departure from Wake Forest
Tate Carney will play his final season of college football away from Wake Forest.
Carney announced via social media that he will enter the transfer portal on Friday afternoon.
Players cannot officially enter the portal until Jan. 2.
It hardly registers as a shock for a fourth-year running back who saw his role diminish under Wake’s new coaching staff.
Carney had 339 yards and six touchdowns on 83 carries in 2024, playing behind classmate Demond Claiborne. He also had 113 receiving yards last season.
But this past season, he had one carry (for 9 yards) in Wake’s Week 2 blowout of FCS-level Western Carolina.
The 6-foot, 207-pounder still played in all 12 games this season, almost exclusively on kickoff returns. He was the off-returner and had one return this season, a 26-yarder against SMU.
Carney’s exit means Wake Forest is losing at least three running backs from this season’s team, as Claiborne and Jamario Clements are both in their final seasons of eligibility.
