More changes coming to BC staff
The winds of change continue to sweep through the BC football program.
On Friday morning, CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz reported that defensive coordinator Tim Lewis has been let go. He also reported more changes are on the way, and EA later confirmed that both Darrell Wyatt (receivers coach) and Matt Applebaum (OL coach) will no longer be with the program.
None of this is surprising after the abysmal 2-10 season.
Lewis spent the last two years here under Bill O’Brien. The Eagles gave up 30+ points in eight games this season and the BC defense was ranked 127th out of 134 FBS teams in total defense for 2025.
The Wyatt move is a bit puzzling (in my opinion). The receivers at BC were never really the issue in his four-year tenure here. In fact, guys like Zay Flowers and Lewis Bond set school records, while younger players like Reed Harris have burst onto the scene under his guidance.
Applebaum has gotten rave reviews from former players (most recently Ozzy Trapilo and Drew Kendall), but that side of the ball struggled to find any consistency this year, especially in the running game. Applebaum returned to BC as offensive line coach for his second stint in 2023 and this past year was his fifth season with the program after serving as the offensive line coach from 2020-21 under Jeff Hafley.
At the time of this post, there were no other coaching changes expected to be made. It’s unclear if any support staff or recruiting staff members were being let go yet too.
What’s next?
As far as replacements for DC, it’ll be interesting to see if Bill O’Brien tries to dip back into the NFL pool with someone he’s familiar with, or if a young, up-and-coming coach gets an opportunity, whether it’s at the FCS or FBS level. Personally, I would love to see Don Brown get a phone call to come back and bring the ‘Dr. Blitz’ aggression to The Heights again.
O-line coach could be in house, with Tyler Vrabel making some sense after working with the program for the first time in 2025. O’Brien – who is still close with Mike Vrabel – could opt to give him the opportunity, or (again), dip into his vast NFL rolodex.
Wide receivers coach is a little tougher to pin point right now, as O’Brien and new GM Kenyatta Watson could go in a variety of directions.
One thing is clear: BC was embarrassed by this past season (rightfully so) and is wasting little time in trying to turn things around as quickly as possible.
