Takeaways from another bad loss for the Eagles

Well, in the words of Jerry Seinfeld, this is no good.
BC is now 1-3 and still have extremely tough games against Notre Dame, Clemson, Louisville, Georgia Tech and SMU on the schedule. Injuries are clearly not helping the situation, but there’s little to no excuse for the loss to Cal on Saturday.
Here’s the biggest takeaways I have:
Slow down the Lonergan hype
He really wasn’t good on Saturday. He technically only threw two picks, but probably should have had at least three, maybe four. Only had 197 yards and zero touchdowns. Is he still really good? Sure, but he’s also still barely played any football and is going to have inconsistent days like the one he had vs. the Golden Bears.
All things considered I thought he had pretty good protection all day too from the makeshift O-line. The only annoying part about that unit was Crounse changing his jersey number like 75 times.
Gotta learn how to not lose before you can win
This was Bill O’Brien’s first comment postgame: “I haven’t been able to get it done in this program to this point, these guys learning how not to lose…we’ve just got to keep fighting. Come in here (Sunday), figure it out and try to fix the mistakes and try to figure some things out.”
He’s 100% right. BC isn’t getting blown out. They’re finding ways to lose in excruciating fashion. It’s a combination of lack of talent and lack of experience, but overall, BC should be winning a lot of these games. It’s a problem until they find a way to start stringing strong performances together.
Penalties creeping up again
15 for 109 yards, some of them absolute killers (like the 4th-&-11 DPI). That’s just playing undisciplined. That’s the first thing that needs to get cleaned up and hopefully it will.
Big day for Turbo
Great to see the running game get going, especially with Turbo. I also loved seeing how much trust they had in him after the fumble issues. He had 15 carries for 171 yards and the two touchdowns. The next closest RB was Jordan McDonald with two carries for four yards. Lonergan had four scrambles for 11 yards. Now, you’d like to see that spread out a little more (thought for sure we’d see more Bo), but that was encouraging.
Lombardo Team MVP?
I’m not even sure there’s much of an argument. the 52-yard FG was absolutely drilled, he’s been perfect (I think?) on PAT’s and you have a legitimate weapon there. I was actually surprised they didn’t let him try a 54-yarder instead of punting at one point. I asked O’Brien about him postgame and he was very complimentary. Probably your most reliable player besides Lewis Bond right now.
In closing
Those are the main ones I can think of for now. I’m sure there’s more. This might be a realllllly long season unless things get figured out quickly, but I’m not sure the injury situation is going to allow for that.
