New GM Watson meets team on Monday

Officially official.

Sort of.

While at the time of this (about 3:00 p.m.), the team hadn’t released a statement or announced a press conference, BC did put out a graphic ‘officially’ announcing its new GM Kenyatta Watson on social media.

The team also posted a video on Instagram of Bill O’Brien introducing Watson to the team in the meeting/press conference room, with a brief clip of Watson’s initial remarks to the group.

“Most importantly, one of the best changes that we’ve made, or additions we’ve made, is we’ve hired a general manager that’s a great addition,” O’Brien said in the clip. “So, Kenyatta Watson is our new general manager. Look, this guy played here. He knows Boston College. He played here from ’93-’96. He’s worked with youth his whole life. He’s worked in Atlanta with youth football, whether it’s Under Armour, Rivals, high school, Grayson High School, did an unbelievable job with Grayson High School outside of Atlanta.

“Then he transitioned into college. He’s worked at Florida State, Georgia Tech and most recently Auburn. He’s coming to us from Auburn where he was the assistant general manager, he’ll be our general manager. So, if you guys could give him a warm welcome…”

That was followed by a round of applause from the team, with Watson making it short and sweet (at least in the video):

“It’s a pleasure to meet ya’ll,” said Watson. “It won’t be long and drawn out. This place is very special to me. I met my wife here, been married 25-plus years. Five kids, four grand kids, I love this place.”

The addition of Watson needs to be a pivotal moment for the future of BC football. What he does alongside Bill O’Brien in the next few months before spring ball – particularly in the portal – will be critical. The Eagles may want to be a program that recruits high school kids and develops them – and you can do that to a certain extent – but the ‘quick fix’ method is where BC is at right now.

Watson, O’Brien, whoever the defensive coordinator, O-line coach and wide receivers coach is and the rest of the staff needs to identify guys in the portal that not only fit BC’s academic standard (that’s not changing. It should, but it’s not), but that can also help win games immediately.
