Kansas freshman guard Darryn Peterson will not play on Tuesday night against Towson, per release. It will be the eighth game he’s missed this season.

Peterson has been battling a hamstring strain since the preseason, but now he’s dealing with quad cramping. That’s what caused the freshman to be taken out late in the game vs. NC State.

“He’s practiced but he’s not going to play,” Bill Self said in his radio interview before Towson. “It’s not his hamstring. He cramped the other day and he’s having a hard time not cramping. And it’s in his quads not in his hamstring. So yeah, he’s not going to play tonight.”

Self added Peterson being “day-to-day” is an understatement because he’s practicing.

“The experts have talked to a lot of people and a lot of different things,” Self said. “Hopefully we’ll find something that helps his legs to feel different and better on gamedays and in the second half of practices. Even though he can continue [in practice], it’s still not optimal.”

Peterson first missed time due to the hamstring in the Louisville exhibition game, playing limited second half minutes. Peterson sat out the following exhibition game vs. Fort Hays State. On opening night, Peterson returned to the floor vs. Green Bay, but the guard was once again limited in the second half.

The freshman guard played his first full regular season game against North Carolina on Nov. 7, scoring 23 points and dishing out three dimes in 28 minutes. However, after that contest, Peterson went on to miss seven-straight games before returning to Kansas’ lineup against Missouri.

Peterson then played 31 minutes against NC State before being taken out. He had 17 points, five rebounds and four assists. In the four games Peterson’s played, the guard is averaging 19.3 points and 2.8 assists in 26.3 minutes per game. The Jayhawks will need the potential No. 1 pick on the floor to reach their ceiling.

Kansas and Towson will tipoff from Allen Fieldhouse on Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET.
