Army falls to North Texas in overtime, 45-38

Going into today’s game against North Texas, one of the proverbial questions is which Army football team will step onto field inside Michie Stadium?
For the Black Knights fanbase, they were hoping that it would be the squad that took down Kansas State two weeks ago
And when the final whistle blows, the hope is that Army would have won their 2nd game in a row over the North Texas Green Wave.
Well, the first half was all North Texas, with tons of assistance from the turnover (3) addiction of the Army offense, which eventually saw Coach Jeff Monken replace QB starter Cale Hellums with senior Dewayne Coleman. Then on defense, the Black Knights’ “D” had no answers for the Drew Mestemaker offense and the Mean Green took an early 21-0 lead.

But Army was resilient and in the 2nd quarter, frosh RB Briggs Bartosh burst through the middle for an impressive 75 yard touchdown run. It was TD on the season and his Army football career, that close the NT’s lead to 21-7.
Then on the Black Knights’ last possession on the half, they went on a productive drive that was concluded with a well executed 2nd & 5 play from the North Texas 16 yard line as Coleman found running back Samari Howard in the end zone and Army close the gap, 28-14 to end the 1st half.
One thing that was noticeable during the first half, the O-Line and Briggs Bartosh came to play.
2nd Half
Long story short … running back Hayden Reed blew off a 37 yard touchdown run with 11:37 in the 3rd quarter and bringing the Black Knights closer, 28-21 and there was a real sense that this was a ball game.
However, true to form, North Texas went on a long drive, and on 4th & 4, they opted for 22 yard field goal and extended their lead to 31-21.
Going into the 4th quarter, Army responded and on 2nd & goal from the 5 yard line, Coleman took it in and the lead was cut to 31-28. Needless to say, it was a very impressive 17 play drive.
But before it was all said and done, the 4th quarter ended with the teams tied at 38 as the visiting North Texas squad’s running back Hawkins hit pay dirt from
21 yards out with 9:03 remaining in the game. And that is how regulation time ended (38-38).
Army would now be able to say they have played two home games and both were decided in overtime.
Overtime
North Texas had the first possession of the OT and wasted no time, as they put 7 on the board.
Army’s possession saw Coleman go down due to injury and Cale Hellums stepped. Unfortunately, the offense, which had been on a 2nd half roll, netted zero in their final attempt and the final score was North Texas 45 – Army 38.
1st | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | OT | Final | |
Army | 7 | 7 | 7 | 17 | 0 | 38 |
North Texas | 21 | 7 | 3 | 7 | 7 | 45 |
