Army Safety Larry Pickett Jr. Hailed as Hero After Rescuing Driver from Fiery Crash

Everyone across the nation has heard, read, or even seen video clips of the Army football player and his father rescuing a man from a burning vehicle this past Friday, shortly after the Army Black Knights’ contest against the visiting Tarleton State Texans.
That player was Cadet Larry Pickett Jr., a sophomore at West Point and safety for the Black Knights. Driving back to campus with his family after dinner in Times Square, Pickett and his father came upon a fiery crash near Fort Montgomery, New York.

With sparking power lines overhead and flames spreading fast, the two pulled the disoriented driver to safety just moments before the car was engulfed. Pickett credited his military training for helping him act instinctively under pressure. His bravery has drawn widespread praise as a living example of Army values: duty, honor, and selfless service. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll commended him as “a young leader” ready to rise to the moment, on the field, in uniform, and in his community.
