As Army Football pushes through preseason camp, Saturday’s scrimmage provided a valuable look at both the promise and the areas for improvement across the roster. From the defense’s continued progress to the offensive line’s chemistry, there’s plenty for Black Knights fans to feel good about.
Senior linebacker Eric Ford praised the defense’s overall effort but kept things in perspective with the opener drawing near.
“The defense looks good, but we definitely need to improve before opening day,” Ford said. “Our linebacker crew is deep, and the young players are coming along nicely.”
Ford also shared his personal focus heading into the season.
“I just need to do the role the coaches give me and make sure I execute,” he said. “I’m very excited to go out there with my teammates and start the season.”
On offense, Will Jeffcoat left the scrimmage feeling confident in the line’s cohesion — particularly the MOB (Men of Brotherhood) unit.
“The scrimmage went well,” Jeffcoat said. “I feel blessed to be playing with guys like Brady Small and Henry Appleton. The MOB looks really strong — we shouldn’t miss a beat from last year.”
He also highlighted the steady leadership coming from Army’s quarterbacks.
“Whoever is in at QB does a great job leading the team,” Jeffcoat added. “For me, it’s just about focusing on execution, my stance, and staying low.”
With just a few weeks until kickoff, the Black Knights continue sharpening both sides of the ball, leaning on execution, leadership, and the strong identity that defines Army Football.

GBK’S SCRIMMAGE ANALYSIS:
This was a scouted scrimmage, meaning Army’s coaching staff deployed scouts to give the 1’s and 2’s a live look at Tarleton State prep.
On defense, several standouts emerged:
- FS Collin Matteson showed reliable tackling.
- Andon Thomas and Kalib Fortner impressed at inside linebacker.
- Bryson Banks continues to catch attention, running with the 2’s at Mike backer.
- Noah Nixon brought physicality at Dog with the 2’s.
The defensive line appears a step behind — largely due to injuries — but should progress as players gain more reps over the next couple weeks.
A number of freshmen are also drawing close attention from the staff, so fans should expect more updates on their development.
We’ll also be breaking down the offensive side of the scrimmage over on the 12th Knight message board, so stay tuned.
