St Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) 3-Star linebacker Phillip Goodrich has flipped his commitment from the Navy Midshipmen to the Army Black Knights.

Needless to say, Goodrich’s decision was not an overnight process.  It was back on August 28th, that 3-Star LB officially de-committed from his previous verbal pledge to Navy.

Hence, the linebacker prospect began exploring his options. He visited several schools including West Point, home of the Army Black Knights.

But following his visit to West Point and after serious consideration, Goodrich canceled any further visits to other schools and made … he made college decision.

“I just got off the phone with Coach (Jeff) Monken, I am committed to West Point,” said the very excited Goodrich in his conversation with GoBlackKnights.com yesterday evening.  “When I broke the news to Coach Monken he was very excited and couldn’t wait to tell the staff.”

Deciding Factors

With other offers on the table and previously committed to the Naval Academy … what were the reasons that Goodrich said yes to the Army Black Knights of West Point?

“I chose Army because it’s everything I look for in a school and more,” he declared.  “While on the visit I was in complete shock and amazement with everything I saw and experienced. I’ve truly never felt like that anywhere I’ve been. That’s why I chose Army.”

“I’m so excited!”

Father’s Perspective & Army History

“We are very excited,” bellowed Phillip Lance Goodrich, father of the talented linebacker, who added additional insight to what he saw with his own eyes as a parent during the family visit to West Point.

From left to right: Phillip Sr. (dad), Phillip Jr. (son) , Tai (mom) and Army LB Coach “Juice” Weaver

“The program’s tools and facilities are elite, and they stand out after our son’s OV weekend. Meeting the coaches, listening and observing. I believe the program has all that is needed to play championship football and CIC NOW!  I personally believe much more is possible.  It’s exciting because the position coaching is extremely Intelligent, cerebral and very good communicators … the staff has great communication and they are excellent in preparation. The tech and tools the staff have to monitor and develop the Black Knight players physically are the best of the best.”

“The tools they have allow a well developed athlete to achieve the highest levels of readiness, the only limit is the individual,” the dad added.  “There is NO “overtraining” on accident which can happen in  elite athletics. The new stadium addition, and the Leadership Development is second to none. West Point is elite and we are proud of our son’s commitment to serve his country as well and carry on the Black Knights tradition of excellent inside linebackers!.  We are grateful and blessed to witness our son make this decision.”

According to Phillip’s dad, his son will be signing Dec. 3rd during the early signing period and plans to rep the Black and Gold.

Goodrich is all smiles with Army CB Coach, Daryl Dixon

“We are all pumped in the Goodrich house,” he declared, as he provided us with this side note.

“His Great-Grandfather Austin Goodrich fought in WW-2 in the 86th Blackhawk Div as a Machine Gunner … In the final push into Germany.  Earning a Bronze Star, Then served in the CIA (27 years) as a case officer. Retiring as a GS15 and Receiving the CIA’s Medal of Merit for his Duty and Service to his country. Phillip Jr was born on June 1st while I was deployed to Ar Ramadi, Iraq with 2nd BN 5th Marines WPNS Co. operating out of South Central Ramadi at COP Iron. His Grandfather on his mother’s side served in the Navy in his early life. We are a Patriotic family who value our American way of Life and Values and Principles … Go ARMY BEAT navy.”

GBK Analysis:

When it comes to Goodrich, he brings speed and he is a physical player.  He will run a sub 11 (10.9 or 10.8) this year in track.

Within Army’s 3-4 defense, he is projected as an inside linebacker … MIKE or WILL.
