Countdown to Kickoff: No. 13

Tevin Washington
The countdown to kickoff is officially on as Georgia Tech‘s season-opening matchup at Colorado on Aug. 29 is less than 100 days away.
Until then JOL will be counting it down with one Jackets’ player daily that wore the corresponding number of days remaining until toe meets leather in Boulder.
With it now 13 days until kickoff in Boulder, today’s focus is on No. 13 Tevin Washington, an option quarterback during the Paul Johnson era that made 31 consecutive starts over the final few years of his college career on The Flats, ran for 2,225 yards and 38 touchdowns and threw for 3,312 yards and 21 touchdowns.
Washington came to Tech in the recruiting class of 2008 after a prep career at Wetumpka High (Ala.) in Montgomery that saw him throw for 42 touchdowns and run for another 25 while earning All-State, All-Metro and All-County honors.
After redshirting in 2008 and playing very little in 2009 with former Jackets’ QB Josh Nesbitt leading the offense, Washington got his first real shot late in the 2010 seasons after an arm injury cost Nesbitt the rest of the schedule. Washington went on to play solidly down the stretch as he finished with 514 yards and four touchdowns on the ground and 417 yards and two touchdowns through the air in 2010.
Washington took over the full-time starting role to begin the 2011 season as a redshirt-junior and held that spot through the end of his final college season in 2012, finishing his time on The Flats with 31 consecutive starts. In 2011 he ran for 987 yards on 243 carries with 14 touchdowns and threw for 1,652 yards and 11 touchdowns.
During the 2012 season, Washington started every game but split time with former Tech quarterback Vad Lee. Washington still put up strong numbers that Fall with 684 yards rushing on 177 carries with 20 touchdowns, which is still Tech’s all-time record for single-season rushing TDs. That is also the most rushing touchdowns scored in a single season ever by a QB in the ACC. Washington also threw for 1,222 yards and eight touchdowns that season.
Washington helped Tech to three consecutive bowl games as a quarterback from 2010 through 2012, including a 21-7 win over USC in the Sun Bowl to end his college career.
Washington ranks second in Tech’s program history in career rushing touchdowns with 38, trailing only running back Robert Lavette’s 45 in the 1980s. That 38 is the highest total for a quarterback in ACC history as well. He is also tied for second in most single-game rushing touchdowns in Tech’s history with four, which he set against Middle Tennessee in 2012.
Washington later returned for a stint on the Georgia Tech staff as a graduate assistant and eventually worked his way up to associate director of player personnel. He holds a bachelor’s degree in management and a master’s degree in building construction and facilities management, both from Georgia Tech.
