Georgia Tech has named Ryan Alpert, Deputy Athletic Director at the University of Tennessee, as its new Athletic Director—the 11th full-time AD in program history. The hire follows a successful playbook previously used by Institute President Ángel Cabrera, who appointed J Batt from Alabama in 2022. With Batt recently departing for Michigan State, Cabrera once again turned to a high-ranking SEC deputy, tapping Alpert to lead the Yellow Jackets’ athletic department into its next chapter.

“Today’s announcement is a reflection of Georgia Tech’s commitment to elevating the competitive profile of our athletic programs on par with our academic profile,” said Cabrera in a statement. “Ryan Alpert is a dynamic, forward-thinking leader who understands what it takes to build a winning culture on a strong financial foundation. He brings deep operational expertise and a clear passion for student-athlete development. We are thrilled to welcome him to Georgia Tech.”

ESPN’s Pete Thamel was the first to report the news, and Alpert had been a top target of the Jackets’ search, along with Clemson AD Graham Neff, a Tech alumnus, as per our initial reports.

“I’m incredibly grateful to President Cabrera and the search committee for the opportunity to serve as the next athletic director at Georgia Tech,” said Alpert in a statement. “As college athletics continues in a period of rapid transformation, I’m excited about all the Institute has to offer and what we can accomplish together. Georgia Tech’s visionary leadership, combined with its world-class academics and commitment to competitive excellence, provides a strong foundation for the future. My family and I can’t wait to get to Atlanta and join the Yellow Jackets!”

Alpert comes to the Flats from Tennessee, where he led fundraising efforts for the Volunteer athletic department as the COO starting in 2021 before being promoted to the number two position there as the Chief Revenue Officer and Senior Deputy Athletics Director under Danny White. Alpert began his career at Memphis, where he was in charge of fundraising before leaving for five years. He went to Missouri after that and then on to FAU under Brian White, before he transitioned back to Missouri, where he was Deputy AD for External Operations before leaving for Knoxville.

Alpert is a graduate of the University of South Carolina with a master’s degree from Memphis.
