Oklahoma head football coach Brent Venables speaks with Texas head football coach Steve Sarkisian before the Red River Rivalry college football game between the University of Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorn at the Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas, Texas, Saturday, Oct., 12, 2024.

Despite winning on Saturday, the Sooners have dropped one spot in the AP Poll ahead of next weekend’s Red River Rivalry.

The Sooners (5-0, 1-0 SEC) dropped to No. 6 the latest AP Top 25, which was released Sunday afternoon, following the 44-0 win over Kent State. They were leaped by Texas A&M, who beat Mississippi State 31-9.

Still, it’s the Sooners’ highest ranking heading into the annual OU-Texas clash since 2021, when they were No. 4.

Texas, however, completely dropped out of the AP Poll after entering the weekend at No. 9. The fell to Florida, 29-21, on Saturday while dropping to 3-2 (0-1 SEC) on the season, foiling a potential Red River Rivalry featuring two top-10 teams.

However, the Longhorns opened as a 3.5-point favorite to beat the Sooners next weekend in Dallas, per FanDuel. The Sooners know the kind of opportunity they’ll have against Texas.

“I’m excited to get down there and get to be a part of the tradition that goes with it,” OU offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle said, “the history that goes with it, the pageantry that goes with it. I think it’s something that’s really, really good for college football, but you can’t look at it through a different lens. It’s our next opponent; we have to prepare, and we have to put these kids in position to go be successful and ultimately win the game.

“I am excited for it, but what I’m excited for is our players to get to go play in this game and be in these moments. A lot of our guys have done that before; they’ve been here for a few years, but some of them haven’t. I think it’s going to be a really special moment that these guys are going to get to carry with them the rest of their lives, so really excited about it.”

The Sooners are the third-highest ranked team in the SEC. Ole Miss (4) still leads the pack, followed by Texas A&M (6), Alabama (8), Georgia (10), LSU (11), Tennessee (12), Missouri (14) and Vanderbilt (20).

Ohio State, Miami and Oregon remained in the top three of the AP Poll.
