ATLANTA, Georgia — The first name that came to mind for Brent Venables when he was asked about young players who will have an impact this season?

Eddy Pierre-Louis.

The second-year guard arrived last summer and spent most of the year on the scout team. But heading into this fall, Pierre-Louis has a big opportunity to earn some playing time.

Venables mentioned him and a few other young guys on both sides of the ball.

“up front on offensive line, I would say a couple of the guys you’ll see a lot of Eddy Pierre-Louis, who didn’t get to campus until last summer. I think you’ll see Daniel Akinkunmi. I think you’ll see (Michael) Fasusi, Ryan Fodje, freshmen offensive linemen that are mature beyond their years mentally and physically.

“On the defensive side of the ball, I would think a few names that you may or may not know. Danny Okoye, pound for pound might be the best athlete on our football team. I think Reggie Powers is also someone that has great position flexibility, plays a lot of different positions for us.

Venables also gave a shout out to David Stone and Omarion Robinson while really highlighting true freshman corner Courtland Guillory.

“Courtland Guillory, a young man from Houston that showed up on campus,” Venables said. “A corner that loves to compete. That’s probably his best quality and trait. Long, super athletic. He loves to compete, shows up every day. He’s a dog. Plays with tremendous effort, lets you coach him hard. I love that about Courtland.”

SEC Media Days was also the first opportunity for Venables to discuss the additions of OL Jake Maikkula (Stanford), WR Jer’Michael Carter (McNeese State) and kicker Tate Sandell (UTSA).

“I’m smiling because they’re good players, and they’re a lot of fun. They like to work. They’re a humble group of guys. Jake Maikkula’s a high-energy guy. Sandell, I don’t know who the All-Pro kickers are, but you would think he’s in the Hall of Fame in the NFL. He’s just got a really cool confidence. It’s not arrogance; it’s a confidence that you know it when you see it, and you know it when you don’t. Maikkula, in a very short amount of time has really just quickly transformed his body and fit right it. He’s a really athletic guy and loves to compete and work.

“Jer’Michael, he’s great. Again, just a ball of energy. He loves the practice field, the weight room, 7-on-7; that’s his sanctuary. He’s one of those guys that he’s like a pig in the mud when he gets out there on the practice field and being with the guys. But he loves to compete. Very competitive, tough guy.”
