NORMAN — John Mateer picked up a big Southeastern Conference weekly honor on Monday.

The OU quarterback was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week following the Sooners’ 24-13 win over then-No. 15 Michigan. Mateer threw for 270 yards and a touchdown while completing 21/34 passing attempts, adding 74 rushing yards and two scores on the ground.

Mateer was the clear offensive engine for the Sooners. He accounted for 344 of the team’s 408 total yards (84%) while accounting for all three of the Sooners’ touchdowns. With the Sooners leading by just one score in the fourth quarter, Mateer commandeered a 16-play drive that lasted nearly nine minutes and was capped off by a Tate Sandell field goal.

Through two games, Mateer has 662 passing yards and four touchdowns while completing 71% of his passes. It’s the most passing yards for an OU quarterback through two games since Josh Heupel in 1999. Mateer also leads the Sooners in rushing yards (98), touchdowns (3) and carries (26). Mateer leads the SEC in total offense (380.8 yards per game).

Mateer is No. 1 in On3’s latest Heisman Poll, which was released Monday.

With the Michigan win, the Sooners rose to No. 13 in the latest AP Poll. They’ll have an opportunity to continue rising this weekend at Temple (11 a.m. CT Saturday, ESPN2) before hosting No. 24 Auburn on Sept. 20 to kickoff SEC Play.
