Report Card: Oklahoma cruises past ORU
Coming off of a tough 105-99 loss in Sioux Falls to Nebraska, a game where Oklahoma posted their worst defensive rating of Porter Moser’s tenure, the Sooners returned home for their first of two straight buy games and got back in the win column with a 95-71 win over ORU.
Still wasn’t a great performance on the defensive end, but let’s dive into how each player graded out in the third win of the season:
Starting Five
Guard: Xzayvier Brown — 74 — 9 points, four assists, three rebounds, and two steals on 4-9 shooting from the field and 1-4 from deep. Absolutely not a bad performance from Brown. He was solid, just nothing special. He did a good job facilitating and didn’t force shots. The next step for him is becoming an alpha guard. That’s what I want to see.
Guard: Nijel Pack — 86 — 18 points, four rebounds, and two assists on 6-10 shooting from the field and 4-5 from behind the arc. Pack continues to be really impressive. He’s shooting 50% from deep on 8.4 attempts per game through the first five games. He continued that tonight and was incredibly efficient. Best performance by anyone on the team.
Wing: Derrion Reid — 68 — 7 points, four rebounds, two blocks, and two steals on 3-8 shooting from the field and 1-5 from deep. You’d like to see Reid be more efficient shooting. He’s 2-14 from deep so maybe the volume needs to go down. Had a solid night defensively, still wanting to see some more flashes from him.
Wing: Tae Davis — 72 — 13 points, five rebounds, and three steals on 5-12 shooting from the field, 1-4 from deep, and 2-6 from the free throw line. First off, can’t miss four free throws. Secondly, this was a fine outing. I’m just looking for more from him. There was a play where he put it on the floor and scored — I want more of that.
Center: Mohamed Wague — 84 — 20 points, seven rebounds, and a block on 9-12 shooting from the field and 2-3 from the free throw line. Great game from Wague. Loved the way he was moving out there. It’s very easy to tell he has improved from last season. It’ll always come down to staying out of foul trouble with him.
Starting Five Average Grade: 76.8
Bench
Guard: Dayton Forsythe — 80 — 6 points on 3-4 shooting from the field with two assists and two rebounds. Forsythe looked really solid. I’d like to see his usage go up on the offensive end — when he goes and gets himself a bucket he looks good. Liked seeing him out there with Pack and Brown. All three of them together is intriguing.
Wing: Jeff Nwankwo — 55 — 7 points, four rebounds, and three steals on 1-6 shooting from the field, 0-2 from deep, and 5-7 from the free throw line. There comes a point where we have to have the discussion about his minutes. He’s not giving you anything offensively.
Wing: Kuol Atak — 59 — 3 points and a block on 1-3 shooting from the field and 1-1 from deep. Played just 9 minutes. Hit a nice three-pointer but only got one up. Was below average defensively but not horrible.
Wing: Jadon Jones — 78 — 8 points, two assists, and a steal on 1-3 shooting from the field and 5-5 from the line. First game back from injury and it was a good one. I already want to see him play 20+ minutes (he played 13 tonight). Looked really good defensively both on and off the ball. Small sample size, but it looked like he is the best defender on this team.
Bench Average Grade: 68.0
Overall Grade: 73.3
