Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables lines up with the team before the Red River Rivalry college football game between the University of Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorn at the Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas, Texas, Saturday, Oct. 11, 2025.

The first College Football Playoff rankings of the season were released Tuesday, and Oklahoma is in a favorable spot.

The Sooners landed at No. 12 in the rankings, per the CFP Committee. The ranking certainly puts the Sooners firmly in the conversation to make the 12-team playoff field.

The Sooners are one of five SEC teams currently listed inside the top 12, joining Texas A&M (3), Alabama, Georgia and Ole Miss. Also in the rankings from the SEC are Texas (11), Missouri (22), Vanderbilt (16) and Tennessee (25).

The rankings made a significant departure from Sunday’s AP Poll. Those rankings had the Sooners at No. 11, two spots ahead of Texas despite the Longhorns winning the head-to-head matchup. However, with both teams at 7-2, the CFP committee gave the Longhorns the No. 11 spot and put them one spot ahead of Oklahoma.

The Longhorns are currently listed as the “First Team Out” of the playoff. The Sooners are listed as the “Second Team Out.”

However, the rankings indicate the Sooners control their own destiny for the CFP.

The Sooners (7-2, 3-2 SEC) snagged a significant 33-27 road victory at Tennessee over the weekend, giving them good momentum heading into the debut CFP rankings. There are two other important factors for the Sooners in the rankings — both of their losses are against teams ranked in the CFP poll (No. 11 Texas, No. 6 Ole Miss) and they also have two wins against ranked teams (No. 25 Tennessee and No. 21 Michigan).

They’ll also have opportunities to add more crucial wins. The Sooners come out of the bye next week and play at No. 4 Alabama (2:30 p.m. next Saturday) before ending the season with back-to-back home games against No. 22 Missouri and LSU.
