Oklahoma WR Jayden Gibson is no longer with the team, per Brent Venables

NORMAN — Oklahoma wide receiver Jayden Gibson is no longer with the team, head coach Brent Venables disclosed Wednesday.
Venables confirmed Gibson’s status after he was asked about the redshirt junior wideout during the SEC Teleconference.
Gibson has not played for the Sooners since the 2023 season, when he caught 14 passes for 375 yards and five touchdowns. He suffered a knee injury during preseason camp last year, which forced him to miss the entire 2024 campaign and all of last spring.
Gibson was still listed on the Sooners’ active roster prior to the teleconference, but has since been removed. On3’s Pete Nakos is reporting Gibson is expected to enter the transfer portal.
There had been hope that Gibson could return and have an impact this season. He was involved with the team during fall camp as he continued to ramp up from the knee injury.
“He’s getting more engaged by the week,” OU wide receivers coach Emmett Jones told OUInsider back in August. “More engaged by the week. Just like (Javonnie Gibson), he gets called out, too. But it’s a beautiful thing to see him run up and down that field and fully dressed in that uniform. I’ll look to my left sometimes, and I’ll see 11 and 1 running together.
“All we got to do is get ourselves in position for when those guys come back and finish this thing the right way so we can position ourselves to play down in Atlanta when it’s time to.”
It became clear as the Sooners began the season that Gibson wouldn’t likely factor into the rotation even if he had returned. Deion Burks, Keontez Lewis and Isaiah Sategna have handled the bulk of the reps at receiver, and Javonnie Gibson has returned from an injury that kept him out of the first five games.
The Sooners (5-1, 1-1 SEC) return to action this weekend at South Carolina (11:45 a.m. CT, SECN).
