Report Card: Oklahoma routed by Arizona State
Arizona State boat raced Oklahoma from the jump in a game that was never close. The Sooners could not hit a shot and the Sun Devils could not miss. It is that simple. The 86-70 loss in Phoenix drops Oklahoma to 6-3 on the season and sets up a must win in Oklahoma City next Saturday in Bedlam.
Here is how the Sooners graded out in the loss.
Starting Five
Guard: Xzayvier Brown — 68 — 11 points, four assists, three turnovers, and two steals on 4-10 shooting from the field and 0-4 shooting from behind the arc. Brown is 0-14 from behind the arc in the last three games; he has been very poor shooting. This was not a horrible performance, but not the type of performance needed from him when your other guards are off. The facilitation was fine, but he needs to be more efficient.
Guard: Nijel Pack — 55 — 7 points, four rebounds, four turnovers, and three assists on 3-8 shooting from the field and 1-5 shooting from behind the arc. No reason to be worried about him, but yikes, this one was rough. He has been so good this season that you figured a stinker like this would happen eventually. It happened. He was bad shooting but also bad as a creator.
Wing: Derrion Reid — 48 — 3 points and two rebounds on 0-7 shooting from the field, 0-3 shooting from deep, and 3-4 shooting from the free throw line. Rough night from Reid; just could not get any shots to fall.
Wing: Tae Davis — 76 — 11 points, three assists, three rebounds, and three turnovers on 4-9 shooting from the field, 0-2 shooting from behind the arc, and 3-3 shooting from the free throw line. Battled foul trouble, but when he was out there he was solid. He continues to look better than he did at the beginning of the season. That is a positive.
Center: Mohamed Wague — 61 — 2 points, seven rebounds, and three steals on 1-2 shooting from the field and 0-3 shooting from the free throw line. Got in foul trouble early — this team obviously cannot have that. His rebounding was solid, but it was an overall subpar night elsewhere.
Starting Five Average Grade: 61.6
Bench
Guard: Dayton Forsythe — 58 — 2 points and three assists on 0-4 shooting from the field and 0-3 shooting from deep. Sprained his ankle which led to a career-low 10 minutes. Made some good passes but still struggling to find a rhythm. Shooting struggles continued, though none were bad looks.
Wing: Jeff Nwankwo — 72 — 10 points and four rebounds on 3-8 shooting from the field and 3-6 shooting from deep. Thought this was actually one of his better outings. Still takes too many quick-fire threes. He was more than playable tonight as a two-way wing. Solid outing on both ends.
Wing: Jadon Jones — 75 — 8 points and six rebounds on 2-5 shooting from deep and 2-3 shooting from the free throw line. He drew yet another foul on a three-pointer. Jones continued to give Oklahoma really solid minutes off the bench. He has been good ever since he made his debut. Minutes should continue going up.
Center: Kai Rogers — 66 — 4 points, two rebounds, and a poster dunk that will not be remembered because of how this game went. He shot 1-1 from the field and 2-4 from the free throw line. The streak of Oklahoma getting solid minutes from Rogers continued. Good sign.
Wing: Kuol Atak — 74 — 12 points and a block in just 9 minutes of action on 4-9 shooting from the field and 4-8 shooting from deep. Without him this is a 25+ point loss. In fact, Oklahoma waited too long to get Atak in. He came in and immediately got to work getting up and knocking down three-pointers. Sure, the defense is not great, but to leave that shooting on the bench for so long is a choice. Needs to play more moving forward — or maybe not necessarily more, but he should be getting 6-10 minutes a game.
Bench Average Grade: 68.3
Overall Grade: 65.3
It is not quite time to push the panic button yet, but Oklahoma cannot afford a loss to Oklahoma State next Saturday in Bedlam at the Paycom Center at 12:00 pm on Fox.
