Sooners announce team captains for 2025 season

Oklahoma announced its season-long team captains for the 2025 campaign on Saturday.
The Sooners will be represented by Troy Everett, Gracen Halton, Kip Lewis, John Mateer, Robert Spears-Jennings, R Mason Thomas and Damonic Williams.
It’s a big departure for the Sooners heading into the fourth season under head coach Brent Venables. In each of Venables’ first three seasons, the Sooners used a rotating cast of team captains for each game week, with numerous players on both sides of the ball serving at least once. But this season, the Sooners will have seven players who are captains for the entire season.
Six of the seven captains have been on the team for at least two seasons. Spears-Jennings, Halton and Lewis are all entering into their fourth season with the Sooners.
Mateer, who transferred to the Sooners back in December, is the only new player who was voted as a team captain.
The Sooners open the season at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30 against Illinois State (ESPN+).
