With recent commitments from blue chip prospects Felix Ojo, S’Vioarean Martin, Donovan Webb and Ace Rowden, Texas Tech recruiting is heating up, and things could be getting even better soon with Frenship wide receiver Chase Campbell announcing on Tuesday between Texas Tech, Baylor and Kansas State.

Joey McGuire was hired as Texas Tech head coach for many reasons, one of the key ones being his ability to recruit and acquire talent to West Texas.

Going back over the years, who have been some of McGuire’s biggest recruiting wins? The list below is only considering each players’ status as a recruit, and is not factoring in what the player turned into once they arrived in Lubbock.

Honorable Mentions

So many players could be named here, but to keep the list reasonable here are 10 who just missed the cut.

1) Wide receiver Micah Hudson

The first five-star commit in program history, Texas Tech won out for the receiver out of Lake Belton (TX) HS despite some fierce competition from the likes of Texas, Ohio State and Alabama among others. The Red Raiders were one of Hudson’s first offers and developed the best relationship with the standout pass catcher which led to his eventual commitment. Even sweeter for Red Raider fans along the way was Hudson’s trolling of Texas and their fanbase throughout the entire process. After a freshman season in which he recorded 8 receptions for 123 yards, Hudson will look to improve upon those numbers as a sophomore.

2) Offensive tackle Felix Ojo

The only other five-star prospect to choose to Texas Tech in the recruiting rankings era is current commitment Felix Ojo, who announced for the Red Raiders on July 4th. Ojo publicly put out a top four of Texas, Ohio State, Michigan and Florida, but behind the scenes the Red Raiders were always lurking and were able to land the Mansfield Lake Ridge product in a shocking announcement. In the meanwhile Ojo has turned into a massive recruiter for the Red Raiders, posting about Tech’s interest guys such as LaDamion Guyton and Asharri Charles among others.

3) Safety Donovan Webb

Another recent decision on the list was Frisco (TX) Panther Creek safety Donovan Webb, who chose Texas Tech over Michigan, Kansas State and Notre Dame. Texas Tech was seen as a dark horse for Webb since the spring, but with 37 offers to his name including major blue bloods, not many people seriously considered the Red Raiders as a factor. Safeties coach Rob Greene and the rest of the staff did an incredible job of winning over Webb and his family, and at the end of the day were able to secure the talents of the four-star defensive back.

4) Offensive tackle Ellis Davis

Landing quality big people is always going make headlines, as was the case when Texas Tech received a commitment from Ellis Davis, a four-star tackle out of Prosper (TX) HS. Davis had over 25 offers, and ended up choosing to be a Red Raider over Stanford and TCU. Davis earned one of the highest honors a recruit can when he was named an Under Armour All-American as a HS senior.

5) Safety Peyton Morgan

From the moment Texas Tech was Peyton Morgan’s first offer back in the same month McGuire was named Texas Tech head coach, the Red Raiders were always seen as a top contender for the safety from Pflugerville (TX) Weiss HS. That didn’t lessen the excitement for his eventual commitment, however. A four-star recruit who held 18 total offers, Morgan chose Texas Tech over a final five that also included Arizona, TCU, Nebraska, and SMU.

Morgan played 11 snaps on special teams as a true freshman while keeping his redshirt. Look for his role to grow in 2025.
