Depth building on the defensive line

Through the first two scrimmages of fall camp, Dooda Banks expressed confidence in Texas Tech’s defensive line. He said the group has become “a great unit” with plenty of depth and “not really a big drop-off when you get to the twos and threes.” That balance, according to Banks, has made the line “electric” heading into the season.

Missing the game during injury

Being sidelined with injury gave Banks a new appreciation for football. He admitted that he “missed everything about this,” even media sessions, and realized “you don’t cherish something until it’s taken away.” The rehab process was not easy, but Banks stayed focused by reminding himself he needed to return stronger than before. Competing against a deep roster only fueled that mindset, pushing him to work harder each day.

Embracing competition

While some might view incoming talent as a threat, Banks framed it differently. He described competition as a choice: “you either gonna swell up or you gonna fold.” Instead of shying away, he leaned into the challenge, crediting Lee Hunter, Skyler Gill Howard, and AJ Holmes for helping elevate his game. Lessons on pass rush, leverage, and footwork have come from those around him, and Banks said having different perspectives from new teammates has been invaluable to his growth.

Mental growth through adversity

Banks emphasized that the toughest part of recovery was not physical but mental. He explained that his mindset is now stronger than ever because he has learned to block out outside noise and distractions. That focus allowed him to stay sharp in the playbook and made the transition back onto the field smoother. He also offered encouragement to teammate Quinten Joyner, reminding him that injury can be a stepping stone: “It’s a setback for a major comeback.”

Excited to compete again

As the season opener approaches, Banks admitted he can hardly contain his excitement about facing an opponent for the first time in over a year. He said he was “static” and “happy,” struggling to put into words what it will mean to hit another quarterback after such a long absence.

Support system and motivation

Throughout his recovery, Banks leaned on his support system, which included his family and teammates such as Charles Esters and Braylon Rigsby. Their encouragement helped him through the difficult stretches of rehab. For Banks, the comeback means everything. “The world,” he said when asked what it meant to return. “I’m trying to put myself out there and go to the higher level. This is more than anything right now — just working. Just work.”
