Special teams for Texas Tech had another solid week after a 42-0 win against Oklahoma State. The most significant moment was when J’Koby Williams had a 99-yard touchdown on the opening kickoff. Now heading to Manhattan to take on Kansas State, special teams will have to continue being explosive and aggressive.

Special teams coordinator Kenny Perry spoke to the media on Tuesday to discuss his expectations for special teams against the Wildcats and how both of his punt returners look.

Coy Eakin and Tristian Gentry both returning punts

Tristian Gentry is now healthy and back on the special teams lineup. He made an appearance last week against the Cowboys as a punt returner, but Perry expects both him and Coy Eakin to return punts on Saturday against Kansas State.

“Coy has been good, but Tristan is back, and you saw he had a great return the other night. So I’ll probably use both those guys,” Perry said. “Tristian’s got that kind of, like J’Koby factor. He’s pretty dynamic, but not as big as Coy. Coy can break tackles, you know, and obviously Coy is in the game. I like having Coy back there, just because it’s like another play, same with J’Koby. It’s just another play… Tristian has got that “it” factor that he can take one to the house as well.”

Perry’s game plan

Perry continues to reiterate the same plan each week, and it doesn’t change: stay aggressive and worry about them, not the opponent. That doesn’t change this week, and Kansas State will be another big challenge for the Red Raiders.

“I’m not worrying about K-State. I’m worrying about us like always. You know, they’ve they got a good program, they have good specialists and good return guys, like they always have. So still going to come down to how we do our stuff. We got to be physical and play physical the whole game. And you know, we made some return blunders. Just balls hit the ground, and we can’t do that. We got to get better at that. That’s kind of embarrassing, but we’ll fix it this week,” Perry said. “We’ve got to protect the ball. They’re good at getting turnovers. So we’ve got to protect the ball, and we got to get some turnovers ourselves.”
