Macy Blackburn Named Big 12 Defender of the Week, Again

Texas Tech had just one game this past week but that is all Macy Blackburn needed to put up Big 12 Defender of the Week numbers. The senior team captain scored one goal and assisted on the other while helping Tech to a 2-0 shutout win over SMU this past Thursday.
“We’ve seen Macy score before, that exact goal actually I think we’ve seen from her,” said Texas Tech head coach Tom Stone. “And the upperclassmen had to start carrying this team. I think they were needing to push a little harder and ask a little more on themselves and those two goals were fabulous.”
This is Blackburn’s second Big 12 Defender of the Week award this season after she took home the award with three assists in the season opener against San Diego State. Blackburn is also the reigning Big 12 Defender of the Year.
Closer Look At Blackburn’s WORK This Week
The first came on a beautiful corner service from Blackburn that found Emilie McCartney for her first career goal. This marked Blackburn’s Big 12 leading fifth assist already this season and her 38th career assist to further push out her all-time lead in that category at Texas Tech.
Blackburn is known as a backline defender and exceptional facilitator working up the flank as an outside back… but she can score if given the opportunity. A skill she showed off on Thursday, getting her sixth career goal and first of the season.
“I think it definitely showcases that wherever you are on the field, in whatever position you’re playing you still have a responsibility,” said Blackburn following Thursday’s game. “If you’re in front of the goal, put it in the back of the net. And so I think it was really cool that as defenders we got the shutout but we also got goals.”
This is Texas Tech’s third Big 12 Player of the Week honor in 2025 as Taylor Zdrojewski was named the Offensive Player of the Week in week one.
