Macy Blackburn Named A Top Big 12 Player to Watch by Top Drawer Soccer

Texas Tech fifth year senior leader and dynamo outside back Macy Blackburn was named a Top Big 12 Player to Watch by Top Drawer Soccer on Friday. Blackburn is the reigning Big 12 Defender of the Year, two-time All-American and 2024 Mac-Hermann Award Semifinalist.
“Getting the defensive player of the year to return is a massive bonus to the Red Raider cause. With Blackburn at her best, nothing is off the table for what this group can accomplish.”

Blackburn has been an elite player for this program since she stepped foot on campus. And while yes she is a defender, she is one of the most feared outside backs in the country because of her ability to create as well. Despite not playing a full season of games in either of the last two seasons due to injury, she still set the all-time school record for assists in her career last season (33.) AS A JUNIOR!
“Her and Kylie [Bahr] both give the whole team confidence the way they attack training and games,” said Texas Tech head coach Tom Stone. “You’re always like, thank gosh I have her on my team. That’s who Macy is to us amongst many other things.”
Blackburn has been a winner at every level. Three National titles in the youth ranks and played on the U.S. Youth National U-17 Team in Prague and Sweden as well. She was a major part of the team’s historic 2023 season and helped lead the team to the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2024 despite a number of injuries to key players.
Blackburn’s Choice to Return to Texas Tech Instead of Going Pro
All of this meant she was a player many were looking at to head to the professional ranks in 2025 but Blackburn had unfinished business at Tech.
“She spent the summer training with pro teams and got some great experience there,” said Stone. That’s where she’ll be going as soon as the season’s over. But Macy’s focused here. She probably could have left and gone and signed a contract somewhere and she’s like ‘Nope, I got work to do, I’m the captain. This is my team.'”
Blackburn will be helped by the return of her fellow outside back menace on the other side Kylie Bahr as well as All-American midfielder Sam Courtwright who both missed the 2023 season due to injury. Add in returning breakout players like Peyton Parsons and Taylor Zdrojewski, and the attacking end of the field for this team could be very dynamic.
Texas Tech soccer begins their season with their annual trip to Denver for an exhibition game on Thursday August 7. Then the real thing begins on August 14 when they travel to San Diego State before returning to Lubbock for the home opener at John Walker on August 17 at 7 p.m. versus Youngstown State.
