Texas Tech QB Griffis's Emotional Return

It was an awesome night for the Texas Tech Red Raiders, securing a victory over Oklahoma State. However, for quarterback Mitch Griffis, the game represented something far more personal: a victorious return to the sport he loves. Having stepped away from football for a period, Griffis’s presence on the field, and his impact during the win, was the culmination of a long, emotional journey. His post-game reflections provide a sincere look at the value of opportunity and the gratitude for a second chance.
A two-year wait: Finding joy in the game again
“It was pretty cool. It was awesome,” Griffis said, reflecting on the win. Indeed, his path back to the field has been arduous. Furthermore, he admitted, “It’s been a long road for me. Been a while.” Griffis disclosed that it had been about two years since he played “a real snap of football.” Being back was clearly a profound moment. Ultimately, he is “thankful to be back doing what I love with such a great group of guys.” The relief and joy were palpable as he spoke about getting a chance to play again.
Trust and opportunity: committing to the Red Raiders
The decision to come to Texas Tech, even as a potential backup, was an “absolute no brainer” for Griffis. Because he grew up watching Red Raider legends like Graham Harrell and Crabtree, he was already a fan of the program. Coach Leftwich’s call offered a way back into the game, something he desperately wanted. Even though he knew the situation was competitive, he believed in the program.
“I didn’t know what my role would be here,” Griffis humbly stated. Nevertheless, he knew if he “just worked hard and kept going to work every single day,” an opportunity might arise. He felt compelled to return to the game. Therefore, he found himself happy just to be in a position to “help the guys down tonight.”
From Concrete to the Gridiron: A Change in Perspective
Griffis’s journey to Lubbock began after a tough period where he admittedly “kind of hated football.” Moreover, he had a “bad, bad taste in my mouth” following his time at Wake Forest. Consequently, he stepped away in June of 2024 and began working. “I was literally working pouring concrete,” he recalled, emphasizing how out of shape he was for football.
However, the distance provided much-needed clarity. After about a month away, he realized “football is where I need to be, and it’s what I love to do.” The new perspective was vital. Hence, he now understands “how lucky I am to get to do this every single day.” As a result, he appreciates the opportunity far more, stating, “it’s a whole lot better than pouring concrete
The touchdown emotion: Cherishing the moment
The emotions following his touchdown run against Oklahoma State were significant. Although he quickly had to refocus on the ongoing game, he let the moment sink in. “It was pretty cool,” he shared. In fact, he consciously tries to “remind myself every morning” that there was a time he thought he would never put on the pads again. Consequently, being able to score a touchdown, or even just play, “was an awesome experience.”
Griffis also made a point to seek out a teammate after the score. When asked about the celebration, he said, “Behren is my best friend here.” Additionally, he noted, “We’re super tight.” As soon as the play was over, he was “looking right for my guy.”
Connecting with family: The first call
The magnitude of the game extended beyond the stadium walls. When asked about who he would call first, Griffis didn’t hesitate. “Probably my brother,” he answered, explaining that his brother is his best friend. Since his parents were in attendance, the first person he missed sharing the news with was his brother. Ultimately, the win, the return, and the touchdown were deeply personal victories.
Final thoughts
Mitch Griffis’s performance was more than just statistics on a box score; it was a powerful story of perseverance and renewed purpose. Finally, his grateful attitude and clear love for the game serve as an inspiration. The second chance he found at Texas Tech proved that hard work and a change in perspective can indeed lead to a remarkable and memorable comeback.
