Joey McGuire, James Blanchard and the Red Raiders have done it again, landing another 5-star recruit to add to their ever-growing collection of blue chip commitments.

The latest recruit to pledge to Texas Tech – Cedar Hill’s Jalen Brewster – also happens to be the consensus top defensive lineman in the 2027 class across all three major recruiting services.

To earn a commitment from Brewster, the Red Raiders went back to McGuire’s old stomping grounds of Cedar Hill, where he coached for 20 seasons (14 as head coach) and won three state titles.

Brewster immediately becomes one of Texas Tech’s top recruiting gets of all-time, something that has been repeated quite often the last several months. The 6-foot-3, 300 pound prospect chose Texas Tech over a litany of offers including a final list which consisted of Indiana, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Texas A&M.

Brewster has NFL bloodlines

Brewster is the son of former Dallas Cowboys 3rd round pick Robert Brewster. The elder Brewster played his college football at Ball State, where he was a four-year starter and was a two time All-MAC first-team selection. That led to him being selected with the 75th overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.

Brewster is Tech’s latest blue chip

According to Rivals, Brewster is rated as the No. 6 overall prospect in the 2027 class, the top defensive lineman and the No. 2 player in the state of Texas.

In the last 108 days – since June 19th, 2025 – the Red Raiders have landed the following blue chip prospects:

Four-star cornerback S’Vioarean Martin, four-star safety Donovan Webb, four-star running back Ace Rowden, four-star offensive lineman Bryce Gilmore, five-star offensive lineman Felix Ojo, four-star wide receiver Chase Campbell, five-star defensive end LaDamion Guyton and four-star defensive lineman K’Adrian Redmond.

Adding a prospect of Brewster’s caliber on top just further solidifies Texas Tech’s recruiting prowess in this new NIL and revenue sharing era.

What’s next for the Red Raiders?

Don’t expect the commitment party for Texas Tech to slow down any time soon.

While the 2026 class is mostly full, the staff has turned their attention to next cycle and that has already paid off in a big way, earning commitments from Brewster as well as the aforementioned Guyton, Redmond and Antonio Underwood. All four of Texas Tech’s 2027 commitments are on the defensive line.

Up next should come a decision from the top rated quarterback in the class, Palestine (TX) Westwood’s Kavian Bryant. Texas Tech is battling the likes of Texas, Florida State, Colorado and SMU for Bryant, who most recently visited Lubbock for Texas Tech’s blowout win over Oregon State in mid September. Bryant is reportedly looking to make his commitment in the coming weeks.

Other top prospects Texas Tech is prioritizing include running backs Jayshon Gibson and Stanley Smart, wide receiver Julian Caldwell, offensive linemen Alexander Herrera, Ismael Camara and Peyton Miller, defensive ends Zane Rowe and Kaden McCarty, linebacker Riley Hinds and cornerbacks Joshua Dobson and Jerry Outhouse among others.
