Beyond the Game: Reggie Virgil’s plan to lead and succeed this season

As the season just started, Texas Tech wideout Reggie Virgil got off to a solid start, recording 4 catches for 56 yards and a touchdown and earning a PFF overall performance grade of 76.3. But his connection with QB Behren Morton did not happen overnight – Virgil described during Tuesday’s press conference the trust they needed to build in order to be successful on the field.
“Well just building a relationship outside the game. So you kind of get to learn who we are as players like off the field and we build a bond and build trust with our quarterback, because it’s not easy to gain that trust because sometimes the quarterback doesn’t know if he can depend on you.”
“So just outside of football and practice. I gotta go get it going at camp when he throws it and ensure that I can be there for him.”
Reggie Virgil builds confidence and community with teammates
After transferring from Miami (Ohio), Virgil entered his senior year determined to make an impact. What better way to do that than by reconnecting with former teammate and now fellow Red Raider Will Jados? Virgil spoke about the strong bond he shares with the offensive lineman, emphasizing how being back alongside Jados has boosted his confidence and helped him thrive both on and off the field.
“Me and Will have always been cool, I think as a freshman he took me to my first doctors appointment, it was a cool experience because you know, you don’t talk as much outside of football but we both had to go to the doctor and we just got to know each other and talked a lot.”
“We can talk trash to each other and it’s just funny, but every time I score he’s always so excited for me and he loves when they call deep shots for me because he knows what I can do.”
The QB position under Will Hammond
Reggie Virgil was asked about QB Behren Morton’s injury status and how he would feel if QB2 Will Hammond starts against Kent State. Virgil expressed full confidence in Hammond and the entire quarterback room, highlighting their leadership, preparation, and readiness to step in and perform.
“I am real confident in Hammond, he’s shown a great leadership ability, he can run the offense just as good. I think he will step in and do a good job. I believe in our whole quarterback room. So whoever gets in and plays will be ready to go because of all the work they have put in.”
The atmosphere of the Jones according to Reggie Virgil
Jones AT&T Stadium is electric on game days, with fans packing the stands in a sea of red and black. The roar of the crowd, the drumline, and the cheers for every big play create an atmosphere that’s impossible to ignore. From the pregame energy to the final whistle, the stadium embodies the passion and pride of Texas Tech football, making every fan feel like part of the action.
So when Virgil came in, he was excited. Especially with all the new changes from the stadium itself to the hype around the team and certain tortilla rule changes, fans were ecstatic to see the Texas Tech Red Raiders play.
“Coming from Ohio, it’s just different. Being able to come here and you’re warming up and you compare and contrast to previous teams, it’s so much different because 2 hours out there’s not a lot of people but then the stadium fills up fast and the atmosphere is just crazy. The culture here is different.”
“Like y’all love football a lot so it’s just different. We come to a bigger school and you get the same opportunity to start on the big stage, it’s just really cool.”
