Report: Hammond to start versus ASU

According to a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel and On3’s Pete Nakos Texas Tech freshman quarterback Will Hammond will get the start at Arizona State in Tempe.
Hammond took over for an injured Behren Morton in the 2nd quarter vs Kansas, taking down the Jayhawks 42-17. Transfer Mitch Griffis will take over as backup to Hammond for Saturdays contest.
Hammond’s stats
Will Hammond came into the Utah game at halftime in Salt Lake City, and was very poised leading the Red Raiders to the 34-10 win. He totaled 169 yards with 13 completions on 16 attempts and 2 touchdowns, picking up an additional 61 yards on the ground with 8 carries.
Although he did not put as good passing stats against Kansas with 7 completions on 16 attempts with 42 yards, his rushing game was extremely proficient. Hammond ran for 61 yards on 8 carries as well vs the Jayhawks, but picked up 2 touchdowns on the ground with his 8 carries.
Season totals for Will Hammond in six appearances;
STATS | UAPB | KSU | OSU | UTAH | UH | KU |
PASSING YDS | 92 | 94 | 14 | 169 | 0 | 42 |
RUSHING YDS/ATT | 64/1 | 27/3 | 17/3 | 61/8 | 1/1 | 61/8 |
COMP/ATT | 7/9 | 7/10 | 4/6 | 13/16 | 0/0 | 7/16 |
PASS TD/INT | 1/0 | 1/0 | 0/1 | 2/0 | 0/0 | 0/1 |
RUSH TD | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2 |
What it means…
Will Hammond will provide a run component to the game that Behren Morton does not. Mack Leftwich was able to effectively use the quarterback rush game at Texas State, and I would expect to see pieces of that transfer over to Saturday’s contest in Tempe. This is an extremely high stakes game for both sides, and Will Hammond will need to get the job done for the Red Raiders Saturday afternoon.
