Curry thrives in position switch

After practice, Texas Tech safeties coach Rob Greene praised the versatility developing in his unit — with John Curry leading the charge.

Curry, originally a linebacker, shifted to the “Star” role when injuries hit the position group. Greene said the move has been seamless. Curry’s intelligence, toughness, and dependability made the transition easy, and his prior experience at “Will” linebacker gave him a head start on techniques and responsibilities.

Now, Curry rotates between both roles — one rep at Star, the next back at linebacker. Greene credits his football IQ for mastering both without mental overload. “He’s a valuable piece in multiple packages,” Greene said. “Whether it’s defense or special teams, he’s full speed every rep.”

Veterans lead, young players grow

Curry isn’t the only versatile weapon in the room. Greene pointed to veterans Cole and BJ, whose experience allows them to shift roles when needed.

Behind them, younger safeties Malik Esquerra, Peyton Morgan, and Oliver Miles continue to make strides. They flash playmaking ability in practice and quickly correct mistakes, often turning to veteran leaders for guidance. Greene sees their development as critical for the group’s depth this season.

Competition sets the tone

Greene values the back-and-forth battles in camp. Some days the defense wins. Other days the offense answers. Sometimes the momentum swings multiple times in a single period.

“That’s when you know you’ve got a strong team,” Greene said. “Small mistakes get punished because you’re facing quality competition every snap.”

High standards, NFL potential

Greene compared this safety room to the successful Tulane teams he coached in recent years — groups that sent multiple defensive backs to the NFL. At the Power Four level, Greene believes the talent is deeper and the leadership even stronger.

Many in the room have pro potential, but Greene said it’s the combination of talent and character that makes this group special.

Role flexibility fuels options

Curry’s role will remain package-specific, but Greene won’t hesitate to start a game in that package if the matchup calls for it. Cole has also grown into a vocal leader, building on the respect he earned through his work ethic.

The return of AJ McCarty, now fully participating after a gradual ramp-up, gives Greene another experienced option. With more than 1,000 career reps, McCarty’s presence strengthens the rotation and raises the group’s overall football IQ.

A complete safety room in the making

From Greene’s view, the safety room is trending toward becoming one of the most complete units Texas Tech has fielded in years — deep, versatile, and led by players who set the standard every day in practice.
