Romello Height is a senior edge rusher who transferred to Texas Tech ahead of the 2025 season after previous stops at Auburn, USC, and Georgia Tech. He’s coming off a strong 2024 campaign at Georgia Tech, where he recorded 34 tackles, seven tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks. Entering his final collegiate year, he was rated among the nation’s top edge defenders in the transfer portal and is expected to make an immediate impact on the Red Raiders’ defensive front.

He spoke to the media during Big 12 Media Days — here’s what he had to say

David Bailey is garnering a lot draft buzz, what part of the season are you expecting to start seeing your name?

” I got to take a lot of steps. But man, I’m not worried about that. Like, all I can do is just keep my head down and work and take it day by day, game by game, and get 1% better. That’s my goal. And once I get to 12 sacks, I feel like they’ll see me then”

Is 12 sacks the goal for the season?

“12-15, I’m going to get 12-15 sacks this year. The record at Texas Tech is 13.”

Sack counter inside the football facility, what is that about?

“Because the goal is 50 sacks, throughout the defensive line. 40 to 50 sacks. So they have that, and they also have a turnover counter. I’d be saying that every time I go to meetings, I don’t really know the meanings behind it. But I know that coach McGuire, he was a D-line guy, so he’s big on sacks and getting to the quarterback”

NFL players that you have looked up too?

“Lawerence Taylor, DeMarcus Ware, Joey Bosa, and Maxx Crosby. I’m super invested into Crosby’s game, I try using that swipe rip a lot that Max uses. I really like Maxx Crosby’s game”

Was transition to Lubbock easier, since you were from a country town in Georgia?

“Yeah, cause i’ve been in a college town before, so it was really like nothing. Super small town thats about it, isn’t too much to do and I love it. It literally, probably like the same size as my own town. Just as much to do out there as there is to do in Lubbock”

Best place to eat food in Lubbock

“Las Brisas, that’s the spot out there, some of the best steaks i’ve ever tasted”

Did you have Las Brisas on your official visit?

“No, I actually missed my dinner because of a flight layover. It was a problem with the flights and stuff, so I got in real late. I didn’t get to go to dinner. They took me to breakfast that next morning, had some good breakfast, Lubbock has some good old breakfast, Chicken Run and Toasted Yolk. I think we were at Chicken Run when I was out there, I’m not sure we went somewhere but the breakfast was good”

So the Las Brisas steak didn’t seal the deal on the commitment?

“It was breakfast, and the facility, and the coaches. That breakfast was good, it reminded me of my hometown. Okay, it was that good country bacon, like all that.”

What does the “WTR” mean on your necklace?

“It means we the reason, everybody has asked me, it’s nothing major, I just wanted to be creative with a piece. it’s like hard to explain it, but we the reason.”

What was it like playing internationally, and do you think it’s good for the Big 12?

While not a direct quote—my recording cut off mid-interview—Romello Height reflected on last year’s game in Ireland as a memorable experience. He described it as “amazing,” noting the energy of a packed stadium and how exciting it was to showcase American football on an international stage. Despite the outcome, he praised Florida State fans for staying loud throughout. Height said he’d love the chance to play in another major soccer venue, calling the experience “unreal” and something that could be significant for the Big 12 moving forward.

Overall Thoughts

Just like with Lee Hunter, I was honestly blown away by how grounded Romello Height is. The way he carries himself, always giving credit to his teammates and coaches—it says a lot. You can tell he’s been around and knows what it takes to lead. He’s that lunch-pail type of guy: show up, do your job, go home, and trust the rest will fall into place. That small-town mindset has definitely kept him humble, and you can hear it in the way he talks. Big things are coming for him and this Tech defense. And like I said before, if this defense takes off, Romello’s going to be a big reason why.
