Texas Tech defensive coordinator Shiel Wood spoke to the media ahead of the Red Raiders’ top-20 matchup with Utah. Wood emphasized that the defense is still growing but trending in the right direction. He highlighted player development, preparation, and the importance of staying disciplined against a balanced Utah attack.

Grading Texas Tech defense and standout players

Wood described the Texas Tech defense as an unfinished product but praised its competitive effort. He said assignments have improved, though mistakes still appear each week. Wood pointed out Brenden Jordan’s smooth transition from the Star position to safety. He added that Amir Boyd-Matthews and Dante Balfour are maturing in their assignments and technique. Wood also singled out Lee Hunter, saying his improved fundamentals and leadership have elevated his game. Shiel Brook earned recognition for two interceptions last week and his consistent playmaking ability. Together, these players reflect the steady growth Wood expects.

Stopping Utah’s run game and Tech’s plan for dual-threat QBs

Run defense has been a major focus. Wood said the unit held firm against Oregon State, but Utah’s rushing attack presents a different challenge. Their backs combine speed and power, forcing defenders to stay disciplined. Wood also stressed the importance of containing quarterback Devon Dampier. He explained that stopping designed runs requires numbers and leverage, while scrambling situations demand controlled pass rush lanes. Preparing for both will be key since Dampier extends plays with ease.

Personnel flexibility elevates Texas Tech defense

Wood credited Texas Tech’s roster depth for allowing more flexibility. At times, three defensive tackles have been on the field together to counter physical offenses. Against spread looks, Wood said additional defensive backs rotate in to match speed. He explained that matchups dictate these adjustments week to week. By tailoring personnel to the opponent’s schemes, the defense can remain balanced and adaptable.

Tech defensive line faces Utah’s NFL-caliber front

Utah’s offensive line is considered one of the strongest in the country, with multiple NFL prospects. Wood acknowledged the challenge, calling them big, athletic, and physical. He stressed that preparation must remain process-driven, regardless of reputation. “Every week it’s about us,” Wood said, noting that success depends on hydration, recovery, and consistent fundamentals.

Blocking out the noise around Texas Tech defense

With NFL scouts expected, Wood said his message to the team has not changed. “It doesn’t matter whether there’s no scouts or every scout there,” he said. The defense is focused on preparation, execution, and controlling what it can.

Lee Hunter leads Tech defense with energy and technique

Wood praised Lee Hunter for setting the tone on the defensive line. He said Hunter’s improved technique and consistent effort have raised his play. Beyond production, Hunter’s leadership has inspired teammates. Wood also highlighted the locker room atmosphere, saying head coach Joey McGuire’s fiery speeches give players added motivation before kickoff.

Respect for Utah and Whittingham’s challenge to Tech defense

Wood praised Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham, noting his defensive background and longevity. He called Whittingham’s consistency “phenomenal” and said his teams always play disciplined football. Wood added that Saturday will be a significant test for the Texas Tech defense against another well-prepared program.
