Quick Look: Team USA and Texas Tech Move to 2-0 at World University Games

The United States, represented by the Texas Tech Lady Raiders, took down Chinese Taipei Saturday 79-68 behind a double-double performance from Jalynn Bristow and hot shooting overall as a team. Team USA will play Poland (2-0) on Sunday at 12 pm CET / 5 AM CT on FISU.TV
“We’re out here, we’re hooping,” Bristow told media following the game. “Just having fun playing with each other, feels good going into tomorrow and hopefully being 3-0.”
This win moved USA to 2-0 at the World University Games after they beat Germany 69-63 on Friday. Those that would like to join the live game chats and discussion with fellow Red Raiders can do so here.
Stat Leaders
Jalynn Bristow – 19 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal
DeYona Gaston – 20 points, 6 rebounds, 1 steal
Denae Fritz – 16 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, 4/6 from three
Quick Summary
For the second day in a row the United States jumped out on their opponent early, overwhelming Chinese Taipei defensively and in the paint to lead 21-13 at the end of the first quarter.
While Team USA had a lead as high as 15 a couple of times in this, TPE used great ball movement and three-point shooting to keep them from ever truly blowing this open. They weren’t alone in their three-point borage however as USA shot 48% from three themselves. The team was led by four-of-six shooting behind the arc from Fritz and three others all hitting two three’s each in Bristow, Sidney Love and Kenadee Winfrey.
It was another great outing for Gaston in the paint as she scored 20 points for the second consecutive game joined by Fritz who has also put up double digit scoring in both games. But the star of the game was rising junior Bristow, finishing with 19 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. TPE’s bigs lost track of the 6’3 forward multiple times as she was able to pop out to the corner and show off her three level scoring abilities in this one.
Texas Tech and Team USA will look to continue to their run against the other 2-0 team in their pod, closing out pool play versus Poland tomorrow. With two wins under their belt they should have a spot in the winner’s bracket secured already so this game is for seeding purposes more than anything.
