Texas Tech and head baseball coach Tim Tadlock announced the hiring of Steve Merriman to be the program's Director of Pitching Development.

Texas Tech and head baseball coach Tim Tadlock announced Thursday the hiring of Steve Merriman as the program’s Director of Pitching Development. The move comes a month after the hiring of Steve Foster to be the Red Raiders’ new pitching coach. Merriman joins the Tech staff after most recently spending time with the Tampa Bay Rays organization. He served as the pitching coach for the High-A Bowling Green Hot Rods and Double-A Montgomery Biscuits teams.

“I am humbled and honored to have this opportunity to be a part of this coaching staff and be a part of a very tradition rich baseball program,” Merriman said in a Tech Athletics press release. “I’ve had a couple of Texas Tech players over my coaching career and anytime I talked to them about Coach Tadlock and the program it was always extremely positive. It was evident that their time at Tech was a meaningful time in their impressionable lives. I’m just humbled and honored to have the opportunity to be a part of that and to be a member of the family.”

Merriman has a long-standing history of success across his 20-plus year career with six different MLB franchises. He also spent time as the pitching coach at Michigan in three different stints.

Merriman has also helped oversee and implement various modern baseball technologies, such as Rapsodo, Driveline, TrackMan and PitchGrader. He has served as an advisory board member for OnBase U and Proplay AI.

Hiring of Merriman next step in Tadlock’s efforts

The move from Tadlock comes as another step in the effort to turn around pitching in Lubbock. The Red Raiders allowed an average 6.49 team ERA in 2025. The Red Raiders also gave up 74 home runs and a .290 batting average.

“We would like to welcome Steve and Sue to the Lubbock community and Texas Tech baseball,” head coach Tim Tadlock said. “As our staff has come together this summer, it was very evident that we needed to look at having someone in the pitching development role, and we are very fortunate to be able to bring in one of the best minds in baseball to our program.”
