Texas Tech’s Johncarlos Miller prepares for breakout 2025 Season

Texas Tech football is just days away from kicking off the 2025 season, and one player ready to make his mark is tight end Johncarlos Miller. With a renewed emphasis on the position in Mack Leftwich’s offense and steady development throughout the spring and fall, Miller has emerged as a versatile weapon poised to contribute in multiple ways. From improved blocking and tempo to stronger leadership and chemistry with his teammates, he reflects the growth and confidence that Texas Tech hopes will define its season.
Focus on the process, not the noise
In an interview ahead of the season opener, Texas Tech tight end John Carlos Miller said the team isn’t distracted by preseason chatter. “We’re a process-oriented team,” he explained, noting that expectations come from outside, but standards are set within the program. Miller added that the focus is on performing every week and holding each other accountable, not on the noise surrounding the season.
Growth and improvement at tech
Miller discussed the work he has put in to elevate his game. “I’ve improved my blocking, even though that’s already something I take pride in,” he said. “I’ve also focused on lining up faster and playing with more tempo.” He believes those improvements, combined with the reps gained in spring and fall camp, have prepared him to play a bigger role in the offense.
Morton’s leadership elevates the offense
One of the biggest differences Miller pointed out is having a fully healthy Behren Morton at quarterback. He described Morton as a true leader who holds teammates accountable and wants the best for the program. According to Miller, having Morton consistently involved this offseason has strengthened the offense and created more confidence heading into the opener.
Tight end chemistry with TC
Miller also spoke about his daily battles with fellow tight end TC, calling him “an amazing player in every aspect.” He credited TC with pushing him in practice, holding him accountable, and never allowing him to slack. “That competition has helped me grow,” Miller said, while also highlighting that their friendship off the field is just as strong, describing TC as “my boy” and someone he spends a lot of time with away from football.
Excitement in Mack Leftwich’s offense
Looking ahead to his role in Mack Leftwich’s scheme, Miller said the versatility required of tight ends makes the offense even more exciting. “I’m getting more balls thrown my way, but also learning new blocking concepts at a higher level,” he explained. He sees it as an opportunity to showcase his versatility while preparing for future challenges.
