Red Raiders add four-star guard Dakari Spear

Texas Tech men’s basketball scored a major recruiting win with the commitment of Dakari Spear, a four-star shooting guard in the 2026 class. The 6-foot-4 standout from Dallas chose the Red Raiders over Syracuse, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, and Virginia Tech among others. Ranked No. 67 nationally and the No. 20 shooting guard by Rivals, Spear’s decision marks a strong start to Texas Tech’s 2026 recruiting class.
“I believe Tech was the right move for me because of how well they are able to develop their players they bring in and the trust they have in their players.”
Spear’s high school and EYBL success
Spear began his career at The Colony High School, where he averaged 23 points and seven rebounds as a junior. His production came on an efficient 55 percent shooting from the field, demonstrating his ability to score at all levels.
On the EYBL circuit with Drive Nation, Spear averaged 13.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. He also shot 41 percent from the field, proving he could perform against top national competition.
“I describe myself as a three level scorer who cab create for not only myself but my teammates as well. I’m also big on competing on the defensive side, so just trying to be the best 2-way player I can be. Tech fans should expect a dawg who is ready to come in and make an immediate impact!”
Versatility and skillset stand out
At 6-foot-4, Spear can play multiple positions across the backcourt. His length and athleticism allow him to defend, create shots, and finish at the rim.
“I’m a 6’4–6’5 combo guard so I can get to my spots and score at each level. Whether it’s catch-and-shoot, mid-range shooting, over my defenders or getting downhill,” Spear explained.
Texas Tech coaches value his ability to stretch defenses with a strong mid-range game and reliable outside shot. His versatility makes him a natural fit for Grant McCasland’s system.
Choosing Texas Tech
Spear prioritized development and environment when making his decision. He wanted a program where education and basketball could grow together. His strong connection with general manager Kellen Buffington and the rest of the staff was also key.
“My connection with Buff and the staff is close for sure. They made me feel like I was a part of the team on my visit and I was able to really get a glimpse of student athlete life at Tech.”
Impact on Texas Tech’s recruiting momentum
This is the first commitment for Texas Tech’s 2026 class, and it sends a strong message on the recruiting trail. Spear’s stock has risen steadily since his sophomore year, and his commitment highlights the Red Raiders’ growing national reach.
With his size, skillset, and mindset, Spear projects as a cornerstone for Texas Tech’s future backcourt. His ability to play one through three gives coach McCasland valuable flexibility.
Final thoughts
Landing Dakari Spear represents a huge win for Texas Tech basketball. His commitment strengthens the Red Raiders’ roster outlook and showcases the program’s ability to attract elite national talent. With his scoring versatility, defensive tools, and competitive mindset, Spear is set to be a difference-maker in Lubbock.
For Texas Tech fans, this commitment is not just another headline. It is the foundation of the Red Raiders’ 2026 recruiting class and a glimpse of a bright future on the hardwood.
