Texas Tech Ranks #23 In Preseason AP Poll
The Associated Press released their annual preseason rankings Monday afternoon. The Red Raiders will open the much-anticipated 2025 season at #23 in the poll. This is Texas Tech’s first appearance in the AP Poll since 2018 after they took down Oklahoma State 41-17 in Stillwater, according to a release from Texas Tech.
Last Preseason AP Poll Appearance…
2008 was the last time Texas Tech was ranked in the preseason edition of the AP Poll. Texas Tech was named co-champions of the Big 12 South that season, and were #12 to open, reaching as high as #2 before closing out at #12. Suffering only two losses that season at Oklahoma and Ole Miss in the Cotton Bowl.
What it means…
Texas Tech looks to take advantage of the ranking, and continue to rise throughout the season. Eight of last season’s AP preseason top 25 schools made the College Football Playoff (CFP). Those teams being Georgia (#1), Ohio State (#2), Oregon (#3), Texas (#4), Notre Dame (#7), Penn State (#8), Clemson (#14), and Tennessee (#15). Boise State, SMU were also receiving votes in the poll with both making the CFP. 4 Big 12 schools were also present in this year’s edition of the poll, including, #11 Arizona State, #17 Kansas State, #22 Iowa State, and #23 Texas Tech. BYU (#26), Utah (#27), Baylor (#28) also received votes, but missed out on the top 25.
