Texas Tech set at No. 4 in final CFP rankings, earn Orange Bowl bid
After dominating the Big 12 Championship to the tune of a 34-7 rout, Texas Tech stayed put at No. 4 in the College Football Playoff rankings. The Red Raiders will play in the CapitalOne Orange Bowl on New Year’s Day at 11:00 AM. They learned their fate Sunday during the CFP Selection Show.
Texas Tech is headed to Miami
The Red Raiders will take on the winner of the No. 5 Oregon and No. 12 James Madison matchup that takes place in the CFP first round. They capped off an 11-1 regular season dismantling BYU Saturday in Arlington and moved to 12-1. Earning a bye in the playoff will certainly benefit the Red Raiders to get healthier before they take the field again.
Much belief surrounded the hope that Texas Tech could potentially play in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl with the prospect of jumping into the No. 3 spot. After Red Raiders everywhere contributed to a record-breaking attendance in the Big 12 Championship, this would have been ideal for Texas Tech. However, with Indiana defeating Ohio State, 13-10, in the Big Ten Championship, the possibility of Tech moving up in the rankings and going back to Arlington essentially disappeared.
The Red Raiders have never appeared in the Orange Bowl – though they have played in Miami several times before. Texas Tech is 0-3 all time when playing in the city, all three losses coming to the Miami Hurricanes.
