Along with every other group, there is still plenty of room for improvement for Texas Tech’s special teams. With two missed field goals from Stone Harrington last week against Houston, and some moving pieces for punt returns, special teams coordinator Kenny Perry isn’t worried and expects his guys to continue making positive strides.

“He’s (Harrington)got a big leg, and we’re going to keep throwing him out there. You know, it’s not about one kick each game. You know, we gotta keep playing and keep doing what we’ve been doing. So those guys, they’ve done a good job. We’re gonna keep doing what we’re doing,” Perry told the media on Tuesday. “Coy (Eakin) I guess had the longest one (punt return) we’ve had this year, I think he had 30 yard return. Had a chance to break if we get got one more guy blocked. So I was glad we finally got that going. We’ve been working pretty hard on it. We’ve had good returns. Just the penalties early have lately, been pretty good. Just keep penalty flag in the officials pocket where it belongs.”

What Perry expects to see from Kansas on special teams

Kansas will come to Lubbock this weekend to take on the Red Raiders, and even though the Jayhawks are 4-2, they have shown positive signs of being an explosive offensive team with plenty of weapons surrounding them.

“They’re really good. You know, they’re kick returner, he’s good, he’s dynamic, I think he’s probably one of the best offensive players. He’s returning kicks for touchdowns,” Perry said. “You know my answer, we’re not going to shy away from it we’re going to kick it. We’re going to go cover and go do what we do. Can’t play football scared. If you play football scared it’s called playing flag football, and we’re not gonna do that. So we’re gonna go attack like we do.”

Still not playing at max potential

At this point of the season, you want to see improvements and changes being made on each side of the ball, but playing your best at this point of the season is not what this team wants. Perry still believes there is another level of football that they haven’t even reached yet, and they continue to demonstrate that they are capable of attaining that level.

“I’m gonna say that we have not played our best football, which is awesome,” Perry said. “Special teams wise, just being 100% on our kicks, get some big returns, couple of blocks here and there. I still think this team’s best football is yet to be played. But, man, it’s sure fun to be with those guys in the locker room before the game, practice, after the game, on the plane rides… we’ve got to take care of, you know, our rooms, and we’ve got to change the issues that we’ve been having, you know, since the first game, we’re still working on it. Once it all comes together, man, it’s gonna be scary.”
