Texas Tech & Team USA Advance to Quarterfinals of World University Games

The United States, represented by Texas Tech, finished off group play at the World University Games with a 78-71 loss to Poland on Sunday. Both teams came into the game 2-0, already having clinched a spot in the quarterfinals. Team USA will face off against Finland on Tuesday, July 22, at 1 PM CT on FISU.TV
There unfortunately was no stream and the stats are not accumulating for the Poland game so I cannot provide much insight. From what I gathered it was a very physical game and Poland’s overall height, including five year pro and 6-7+ Kamila Borkowski, got USA | Tech into a hole early they couldn’t quite overcome.
USA did control the fourth quarter outscoring Poland 20-8 in the final frame, should the teams rematch in bracket play hopefully that carries over. They are on opposite sides of the field however so any rematch will have to wait until a medal game should each advance that far.

Team USA takes on a Finland team that ran through group play with ease holding a 3-0 record and +155 point differential. They beat Argentina 101-40, Czech Republic 66-54 and India 117-35.
Off purely statistics Finland has been the most dominant team in this tournament averaging 94.6 points per game while holding opponents to just 43 points. They boast a deep roster with 12 players getting time in games thus far and four averaging in double figures.
Unfortunately their game today versus India also had stat issues and is not yet in the system but going off the first two games alone their leading scorer is Teresa Seppala who has been a NCAAW mid-major star for Sienna the past three seasons. The 6-0 forward averaged 16.3 points and 6.3 rebounds on 40% from three and 44% overall from the field for the Saints this past year.
Fans can watch the game on Tuesday at 1 PM CT on FISU.TV. The winner will advance to the semifinal medal rounds on Wednesday while the loser will move into a mini bracket to determine places 5-8 in the tournament.
