Revenge of the Commodore: Vanderbilt vs Georgia State Preview

Coaching Changes

Georgia State enters the 2025 season with new coordinators on both offense and defense. Hue Jackson takes over as offensive coordinator, bringing prior experience at USC and in the NFL, where he served as head coach of the Cleveland Browns from 2016 to 2018. On defense, Travis Pearson assumes the coordinator role after three seasons as an assistant cornerbacks coach at Troy.
Defense
The defensive unit added depth with cornerback Damaryion Fillmore, a junior college transfer from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, who recorded 37 tackles and three interceptions in 10 games last season. Defensive end Cayden Adkins brings production from 2023 that included 120 tackles, 40 tackles for loss, seven sacks, and 12 quarterback hurries. Linebacker Marlin Dean also contributes returning experience, having posted 10 tackles, one sack, and a forced fumble thus far.
Offense

Quarterback Cameran Brown leads the charge for the Panthers. Brown has shown marked improvement from the previous year. He has completed 25 of 37 passes for 257 yards, averaging 6.9 yards per attempt, with four touchdowns and no interceptions, producing a passer rating of 161.6.
In the run game, Rashad Amos leads the way with 140 yards and one touchdown on 26 carries (5.4 average). Additional contributors include Branson Robinson (79 yards, long of 47), Cameran Brown (58 yards and one rushing touchdown), and TJ Peyton (55 yards, 13.8 average).
The receiving group is highlighted by Ted Hurst, who has recorded 18 catches for 275 yards (15.3 average) and two touchdowns, with a long of 52 yards so far.
Outlook
Georgia State approached the 2025 season with a combination of new coaching leadership and returning production on both sides of the ball. The team’s progress against Vanderbilt will depend on its ability to maintain a balanced offense and generate consistent defensive pressure.
