Vandy Boys of Summer, Week 6 Cape League Recap: The Summer of Ryker Waite

With the regular season ending on August 3rd, we are officially in the home stretch of the 2025 Cape Cod Baseball League season. As the summer winds down for the Vandy Boys on the Cape, here’s some of the latest developments.
Waite and Schulz held their own in the All Star Game
On Saturday, July 19, the Cape Cod Baseball League held its annual All-Star Game at Red Wilson Field in Yarmouth, MA. The East All-Star prevailed over the West 13-8. Ryker Waite went 1 for 3 out of the leading spot for the West and continued his stellar defense with some strong glove work. Jakob Schulz pitched 2/3 of an inning with 1 strikeout and 0 walks and 0 runs. While nothing flashy, both Schulz and Waite represented the Commodores well and proved themselves worthy of their All-Star selections.
The summer of Waite continues
Ryker Waite has taken full advantage of a starting role with Bourne. The scrappy 5’9’ sparkplug is batting .308 with 2 home runs, 3 doubles, 2 triples, and 14 RBI, with 11 stolen bases and an .872 OPS (currently ranked sixth among eligible players). All the while, Waite has displayed steady defense throughout the summer at shortstop.
Waite entered the summer as a lineup afterthought and has now played himself into fighting for a role in fall ball. With Brodie Johnston potentially making the move to shortstop, Waite could find himself a role at second base with his speed and athleticism. Of the infield positions, second base is a spot where you can afford to have less power albeit the player gets on base and can hit for extra bases. Waite has checked off those two boxes this summer.
Holcomb’s average continues to climb
Braden Holcomb got off to a slow start this summer and is now batting .264 with 4 doubles and 11 RBI. On Monday night, Holcomb went 3-4 with 2 RBI against Orleans in a 12-9 loss. Holcomb appears to be catching fire at the right time as Bourne fights for a playoff spot.
Shorey shining as a starter
On Tuesday night, Matthew Shorey went 4.2 innings for Bourne and gave up 1 earned run on 5 hits with 3 walks and 2 strikeouts in a 4-4 tie against the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. His ERA is now 2.22 (currently ranked 5th among eligible starting pitchers) on the summer to go along with a 2-1 record and 23 strikeouts to 11 walks over 24.1 IP. Shorey’s numbers speak for themselves and his continues his climb toward an increased role in 2026.
Schulz remains steady
In Falmouth, Jakob Schulz continues to roll on what has been an efficient and productive summer. In 12.1 IP, Schulz has a 2.19 ERA to go with 16 strikeouts and 8 walks on 240 pitches. Whether it’s facing one batter or going one 1 inning, Schulz has mowed down hitters all summer.
Playoff picture
Bourne currently sits in second place in a tight Western Division with a 14-15-2 record. Falmouth is in fourth with a 13-17-1 record. Were the playoffs to begin today, all of the Vandy Boys on the Cape would be on playoff teams.
Stay tuned for a recap of Week 7 next week!
