Nevada transfer quarterback Brendon Lewis has been told he would be the opening day starter at quarterback per On3’s Pete Nakos.

Lewis, 6-foot-3 209 lbs., brings a skill set that the Tigers haven’t had in a while in a starting quarterback, a true dual-threat. Last season at Nevada, Lewis led the Wolf Pack in total offense (3,065 yards), passing yards (2,290), and rushing (775 yards).

Lewis comes in after the graduation of Memphis’ all-time leading passer Seth Henigan. Henigan wasn’t a dual-threat quarterback but he could use his legs when needed. His best year for rushing yards was his sophomore season when he rushed for 287 yards.

LAST TIME A MEMPHIS QB LED THEM IN RUSHING AND PASSING?

The last time Memphis had a quarterback that led the team in passing and rushing was back in 1990 when Keith Benton led the Tigers in passing with 1,265 passing yards and 612 rushing yards.

The fact that Memphis has a true dual-threat quarterback is something that excites Tiger offensive coordinator Tim Cramsey. He told fans that the Tigers offense will be different this year due to the speed they have and that the quarterback room has elite talent.

Cramsey said he will shape the offense around his players. So expect to see new wrinkles in the offensive play calls this year.

Memphis opens the season Saturday August 30th against Chattanooga. Game time is set for 3:30pm CST and will be aired on ESPN+
