Emanuel County Institute (GA) four-star prospect Chase Johnson thinks very highly of Georgia.

Johnson has the Bulldogs among his top teams, along with Tennessee and Florida. However, the 2027 defensive back is also receiving attention from Florida State, Penn State, and several other Power Four schools.

Georgia stands out to Johnson because the staff offered him early in his recruitment. Plua a fellow Emanuel County native, Demello Jones, plays for the Bulldogs as a cornerback.

“I actually love Georgia,” Johnson recently told UGASports. “Demello Jones actually came from down here. … He just tells me to go there and [see a practice], stuff like that. They play ball there. He said spring ball was very hard, but he grew a lot. He played quarterback but grew more as a DB there.”

As a redshirt freshman cornerback, Jones has recently seen more action this year. Johnson saw Jones get valuable playing time for the Bulldogs in a loss to Alabama on Sept. 27.

“After seeing him make his first play, he seemed real confident,” Johnson said of Jones. “That was cool to see.”

Where things stand

Johnson admitted that he doesn’t talk to the Georgia staff much, but hopes that changes in the next few months.

Johnson is in contact with position coaches Travaris Robinson and Donte Williams the most. Williams visited his Emanuel County Institute Johnson for a practice in the spring, which meant a lot to the four-star prospect.

“It brought me real excitement,” Johnson recalled of Williams’s visit. “I was so happy, especially because we’ve got a lot of Dawg fans around here. It just felt good.”

When Johnson does talk to the coaches, they talk about life and football. A recent conversation with the Georgia staff centered on how Johnson would fit into their defensive scheme as a versatile defensive back.

“I feel like I fit good into their man scheme because they like some downhill DBs,” Johnson said.

Johnson appreciates how Kirby Smart is a defensive-minded coach who actually played his position at the college level. He also values the development aspect of the program and said it’s a major attraction for him.

What’s next for Johnson

Johnson plans to attend his first game at Sanford Stadium on Oct. 18 when Georgia hosts Ole Miss. The 5-foot-11, 160-pound prospect hopes to develop a closer relationship with members of the staff.

Johnson also wants to see how the gameday atmosphere in Athens compares to that of other stadiums he’s visited.

And of course, he can’t wait to watch Jones play against the Rebels and catch up with him after the game.

“I just want to meet the coaches and see the game and a good atmosphere,” Johnson said.
