Northwestern flips three-star LB Max Mohring from Kentucky
Northwestern’s Class of 2026 got an unexpected boost on Nov. 17 when three-star linebacker Max Mohring, a former Kentucky commitment, announced his commitment to the Wildcats.
Mohring, from Downington (Pa.) Malvern Prep, was committed to Kentucky since June 17. But he took an official visit to Northwestern over the weekend, when he watched the Wildcats take on No. 18 Michigan at Wrigley Field, and decided to become a Wildcat.
An outstanding student with a GPA above 4.0, Mohring received five offers from Ivy League schools. He had his eyes on higher level football, however, taking official visits to UCF and Kentucky before deciding on the Wildcats from the SEC.
He was a member of Kentucky’s 2026 class for five months before visiting, and then committing to the Wildcats from the Big Ten.
Northwestern defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Tim McGarigle is likely enticed by Mohring’s length, frame and speed. The Wildcats like rangy and athletic outside linebackers, and Mohring is listed at 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, with long arms. His personal record in the 100 meters for Malvern Prep is 11.19 seconds, which roughly equates to a 40 time below 4.7 seconds. He is a smooth athlete on tape.
Mohring helped lead Malvern to an 8-2 mark in 2025. The Friars lost the season opener, then ripped off eight straight wins before dropping their last game against Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, 21-20, in overtime.
Mohring is the 18th member of the Wildcats’ Class of 2026, which is ranked 63rd nationally after his commitment. He is the first and only linebacker in the class.
