The top two finishers from last season, Amanda Lorenz and Lexi Kilfoyl each stepped up for their team’s to provide Opening Day wins in AUSL All-Star cup. Kendra Falby had a great professional debut and Rachel Garcia had her best outing as a pro.

Team Kilfoyl 3, Team Ocasio 2

In the final moment, each captain had their chance to leave their mark as Aleshia Ocasio stood in the box against Lexi Kilfoyl in the top of the seventh. Ocasio, with her team down to their last out, had runners on the corners. However, Kilfoyl did what she does, forcing a groundout to end the game.

Kilfoyl’s offense picked her up in the bottom of the sixth. Kendra Falby, in her professional debut, delivered the go-ahead RBI single, her second hit of the game. Sydney McKinney, who saved a run earlier in the game with a great defensive play, drove in a much-needed insurance run to increase the lead to two.

That was certainly needed. Although Kilfoyl went the distance, Team Ocasio had 14 hits against her. Korbe Otis, who ended the game with three hits, blasted a solo home run to lead off the seventh. Jessie Warren had three hits as well. Kilfoyl stood tall in big moments as Team Ocasio went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

Danielle Gibson Whorton had an early RBI double and a pair of walks for a good individual stat points day in the win for Team Kilfoyl.

Team Kilfoyl picked up 70 win and 40 inning points. Falby picked up the top MVP points, followed by Kilfoyl and Otis. Anissa Urtez of Team Ocasio earned Defensive MVP.

Team Lorenz 1, Team Corrick 0

Amanda Lorenz, the reigning champ, kicked started her team’s lone offense with a single against Payton Gottshall. Lorenz then scored from first after Kayla Kowalik doubled into the right-center gap and that was the only run her team needed. And due to the pither’s duel, the fifth inning win gave Team Lorenz 50 inning points. Lorenz finished the game as the lone pitcher with multiple hits.

The day belonged to Rachel Garcia. The former UCLA superstar pitched a gem. Garcia brought a no-hitter into the fifth inning before Sydney Romero singled to left field, but Garcia answered back with a quick out before rolling an inning-ending double play ball.

Garcia only allowed two baserunners, hitting a batter in the fourth. She was very efficient, only needing 84 pitches to shut out Team Corrick. Garcia leaned on her defense, rolling nine groundouts and inducing nine flyouts.

Garcia nearly had a good day at the plate too. She almost had a solo homer in the fourth but Jadelyn Allchin caught it right at the wall with her arm raised. Garcia was robbed of a base hit by Sierra Romero, who made a jump throw from second to get the out.

Team Lorenz had plenty of chances early, including second and third with no outs in the second. Sam Landry, the Team Corrick starter, was helped by a great diving play by Paige Snicki at third. Landry rolled a groundball and struck out Victoria Hayward to strand the bases loaded.

Team Lorenz earned the 70 win and 60 inning points, the best start you could ask for to start the season. Garcia, Kowalik and Lorenz were awarded the MVP points. Sierra Romero was the Defensive MVP.
