Volts stave off Bandits’ rally; Talons run-rule Blaze

Volts 5, Bandits 3
Volts ace Rachel Garcia and Bandits rookie Emiley Kennedy started in the first game back from break.
The first two innings went well for the two starting pitchers. They struck out a combined four batters in two scoreless innings. In the third, however, the Volts were the first on the scoreboard. Amanda Lorenz belted a two-run homer to grab the lead.
Garcia dealt another zero in the top of the fourth, and the Volts tacked on two more in the home half. Dejah Mulipola’s RBI single scored Mia Scott, chasing Kennedy from the game. Then, off reliever Devyn Netz, Ciara Briggs singled and Danieca Coffey walked to score the Volts’ fourth run of the game.
Garcia remained strong in the fifth, tallying her fifth strikeout of the game en route to another scoreless frame. Tiare Jennings then added an insurance run for the Volts on a solo shot.
Trailing 5-0 and down to their final three outs, the Bandits mounted a comeback that fell just short. A walk and a fielding error put runners aboard when Erin Coffel singled, Bubba Nickles-Camarena reached on an error and Delanie Wisz singled to drive in three runs. Fortunately for the Volts, Garcia buckled down and struck out the tying run to end the game.

The Volts take a much-needed Game 1 from the Bandits as the race for the first-ever AUSL championship winds down.
Talons 9, Blaze 1
Talons starter Megan Faraimo and Blaze pitcher Alana Vawter dealt a pair of scoreless innings to open the second half of the AUSL season. Similar to the earlier game, both the Blaze and the Talons got on the board in the third.
For the Blaze, Aliyah Andrews’ RBI double scored the game’s first run. Four straight singles gave the Talons a 2-1 lead in the home half of the third. A fielder’s choice and a throwing error then tacked on two more for the Talons, extending the lead to 4-1 after three innings.
Faraimo answered with a shutdown inning, and the Talons poured it on in the fourth. Ali Aguilar homered, scoring two more runs. Then, Hannah Flippen recorded her third RBI of the game on a single to center field. Victoria Hayward followed with a two-run double to extend the Talons’ lead to eight.
Faraimo finished off the Blaze in order in the fifth, retiring all three batters she faced. The Talons’ run-rule, 9-1 win over the Blaze keeps them in firm control of their own destiny as the regular season comes to a close.
