Former RB Brian Battie to be honored as a graduate on Senior Day

Former Auburn running back Brian Battie is scheduled to be honored as a graduate on Senior Day when Auburn hosts Mercer on Saturday afternoon, the university noted in a social media post on Friday.
Summarizing the reporting over the past year, Battie’s recovery has been remarkable. The former Sarasota High School star was shot in the head on May 18, 2024, in an incident that also took the life of his brother, Tommie Battie IV. In the days following the shooting, Brian was in critical condition and unable to walk, talk, open his eyes or breathe on his own. Doctors warned the family he could face permanent paralysis on his right side.
Within three weeks, Battie began walking with the assistance of a cane, surprising his medical team and giving his family renewed hope. He eventually graduated from speech therapy and continues physical therapy to restore full mobility and right-hand functionality. By fall 2024, he was strong enough to return to Auburn and join his teammates on the sideline during the Iron Bowl.

Battie’s resilience earned national recognition. He was named a recipient of the 2025 Wilma Rudolph Student-Athlete Achievement Award, presented annually to student-athletes who overcome significant personal, academic, or emotional challenges. Battie has also focused on his academic path, working to complete his sociology degree at Auburn and expressing interest in becoming a motivational speaker.
The family continues to navigate its grief after losing Tommie, as well as the financial challenges of Brian’s long-term rehabilitation. A GoFundMe was created to help support ongoing therapy and recovery needs. Meanwhile, the legal case is moving forward in Sarasota County. The suspected shooter, Darryl Bernard Brookins Jr., a five-time convicted felon, has been arrested and is awaiting further court proceedings.
